First, you want to figure how much more time you have on your factory warranty (it could be as low as only 11 months). Mazda doesn't do TSBs for free after the warranty period.

As NoTears316 says, make sure all the recalls are done (Mazda service can check in their database) and also check if your specific car is having any of the problems listed in the service bulletins. If so, get them addressed. Check to see if your headlights or tailights get water inside after a heavy rain. Mazda will replace for free even though there is no official TSB on this issue.

Since you have a 2004, print out a copy of the "Engine cranks no start" TSB, take it to the dealer and ask for the new battery, starter and plugs if it has not already been done. If they say no call the MNAO 800 number and get them to OK the upgrades. These updates make a big difference in reducing the chances of the car flooding.

Never turn the engine off before it has had a chance to reach normal operating temp.

Just check the oil very frequently, Redline it at least once a week, and dont turn it off cold. thats about the only thing that separates this from a piston car. That and the overwhelming urge to drive it all the time! Enjoy

This is a common dealer BS response. Unlike the other TSBs, these are preventative fixes that offset the fact that Mazda initially built the RX-8 with an under-powered battery and starter to save weight. The new battery/starter/plugs make a world of difference.

If you want to push it call the MNAO 800 number (see you owner's manual) and say that you have an older RX-8 (2004) that is slow starting and the dealer won't do anything until the car actually floods, something you would prefer to avoid.

Just curious, I am new as well, I have an '05 RX-8, do I need to worry about the flooding issue as well? It's an early 05 so I think I have the new starter and battery but not the newer leading plug.

Also, the comment I've seen on the boards about revving the car to 3k before shutting it off, is thsi aslo an 05 issue or something I should be doing?

My previous car was also a SE-R spec V, but it was a 2002. I bought it new and never had any problems with it, but sold it with 36,000 miles due to financial reasons. It was also a very fun car, great torque but torque steer was a bitch.

That noise is normal don't worry about it, I think it's the throwout bearing.

I think you could've got a better deal for that. I bought 6 months ago my used 2005 6mt with GT package(no Navi) with 7,700 miles for $21,000.

Trust me it's normal. I was worried in the beginning too, just read some older posts like the one below to calm your nerves.
