Wow, you guys on the first page are pretty harsh. I can see what he means, the rx-8 (to non owners) has the appearance to be Mazda's dominating car in every performance manner so when a smaller, less expensive, less refined car outperforms it in some way, things could get confusing.

mazdaspeed3=power
rx8=refinement, class, uniqueness, looks, and my personal favorite - amazing handling

I plan on keeping my 8, regardless of how much faster or more powerful the Speed 3 is. The Speed 3 is an awesome car, but it's aimed at a different crowd, younger guys who are into 1/4 times and such.

Why does Hatchback = "Whipped"? Why would you care what your neighbors think anyways? Do you base your car purchases primarily on how other people will view you? It's nice to get compliments on your car and to have a car that you find aesthetically pleasing, but you've got a problem when that's your #1 priority.

In that case you should find yourself a nice Jaguar, or maybe just invest in a set of Spinnaz for a Chevy Cavalier and move to Detroit.
Umm Bro, the "/" between the words Hatchback and Wagon indicates an either / or type structure. I hope that makes sense to you.

Chances are if he's here asking our opinion then YES he does care about how people view him. If we all said "HELL YEAH GO OUT AND BUY A MS3", theres a good chance he would consider it more.

If you believe that you as a person do not care how other people perceive you, then... well... congratulations. You're a hero to your fellow tough guys all around the world.

Actually, one could consider it an SUV, given how well it seats at least two people and drinks gas and oil insatiably.

Insurance profile might be better, too.

No offense to those of you that are happy with your 3's, but having spent the past 24 hours in a base model loaner 3 due to emmission recall, all I can say is: You can only polish a turd SO much; in the end, it's still a turd.

Now, IF I was in the market for something specifically like that, maybe. But NEVER, if an 8 was a possibility. They are simply apples and oranges in so many ways.

If you want an MS3, get one and quit whining. If you like your 8, no need to bash non-8 owners.

I mean...MazdaSpeed 3 is not a 'Sports Car'. It's just a fast compact car.

It's a ROTARY thing...you either "get it" or you don't. The wankel engine is just so totally different THAT'S what it's all about. Got Nothing to do with 0 to 60 etc.t
It's a rotary thing...pure and simple

"Bro", there's a big difference between a vehicle's flashiness & attention getting that you ***umed and the performance-oriented questions that the OP actually asked. He was thinking about the MS3s better 0-60 times, HP, torque, and overall cost. Those are legitimate things to take into account when trying to decide between two cars, both of which are very good choices. They're also not the only things to consider -- like the rotary's uniqueness, engine sound, handling, brake performance, styling, cargo room, passenger space, gas mileage, repair costs, etc etc.

Do I like the compliments I get on my RX-8? Hell yeah. I get a kick out of telling people how a rotary engine works when they ask if it's a 6 cylinder. Would I also get attention with a nice looking Winning Blue MS3? Yep. Do I give a **** whether my neighbors or people on the internet would approve of my car choice or think it's a "souped up grocery getter"? **** no.

Anyways, this is stupid, if he's considering both, go test drive both and see what he likes.
