You don't need to constantly fill up the engine oil. However, the rotary engine in the RX-8 does burn a small amount of oil because small quantities of engine oil are injected into the combustion chamber to lubricate internal seals. Accordingly, you should check your oil level more often than other vehicles not designed to burn oil. Actual oil consumption varies by use, but my car seems to use about a quart every 2000 miles.
I get about 16 MPG with mostly city driving.

most people seem to be down about 1 quart between oil changes.
I've actually burned one quart in 1,000 miles. The OMP varies the amount of oil injected based on usage. So if you're on the track, you should expect more oil burn than highway cruising.

In all city driving I can get around 15MPG. Also, if you do alot of short trip driving where your car never gets the chance to really warm up, the car can do worse. It runs very rich when on choke.
Oil injection is a necessary feature of a rotary engine to maintain seal integrity.
Also, the car needs to be warmed up after being started and prior to shut down or the car can flood and become very difficult to start.
All of the above are just quirks, and in just a short time you'll forget about all of it, and just do it. It becomes second nature to check the oil, and as a poster above said, it's a sports car. You shouldn't worry about fuel mileage in any sports car. Congratualtions and enjoy the new 8!

Welcome!
If it's a new car, there should be a manual in your glove box........read it.
If it's a used and no manual, go to www.mazdausa.com and download one under the owners section and read it.
