new member saying hi

hello everyone.
my name is Kevin and I just purchased a used 05 Rx8 with 10k miles.
I got an unbelievable deal so I couldnt let it pass.

I traded my evo9 for it.
Anyhow, what are some common problems with the 05's?
So far it drives great. Chassis feels a bit tighter than the evo and the steering
response is good as the evo.

It's a bit slow but I didnt buy this car for straight line speed so that's ok.

Just wanted to drop by and say hi to everyone.

hi.

have a Mazda dealership run your VIN to see if there are any recalls that need to be done to your car, that's probably the easiest thing to do first.

then read the stickies in the RX-8 FAQ subforum section, THEN you ask questions, k?

welcome

congrats on the purchase. The 8 will not touch the evo in terms of straightline speed, but the rotary's uniqueness is what sold me on it. Overall handling / control feel on the road is at least equal to the evo as well, IMO.

As long as the recalls have been done, no worries. The rotary can actually be more reliable than a piston engine due to fewer moving parts. Redline it at least a few times a week to ensure long lasting reliability. Unlike a piston engine, taking it up to redline will not hurt it.

Thanx guys.
I just read that post and it's imformative.

I had an 90 rx7 and it's been a while since I drove a rotary engine
so this is all good to me.
Reminds me of early college hehe .....

I am gonna be doing most of the fluid changes myself so I need to obsorb
as much info as possible.
Thanks again guys.

BTW, I did run the vin before purchasing the car and nothing bad came up.
I just wanted to know if there are other common probs/recalls that you know of
for the 05's.

Not that I know of. Check and change the oil often as you already probably know. don't baby it, "Drive it like you stole it" (a common phrase here)......meaning try to redline it once or twice a day.
I've had mine since brand new in late 05 and not a single issue, except for one TPMS issue I caused with adapting them to my after market rims. What color are ya?

My car is black.
I always loved the smoothness of the twin wenkel rotary motors when I had
that 90 rx7.
It was a big decision to trade the evo for the rx8 but I am sure I made the right decision.
The evo is a good car but it's missing a lot of the interrior features of the rx8.
Actually I've had two evo's. An evo 8 and a 9.
Both evo's I had put down around 330hp @ the wheels.
They were not monsters but they were pretty quick cars.

Now I prefer balance than forced induction power.
A nice interrior is a plus on the Rx8 too.

Welcome!
Difference is, I traded in my mazda6. Well....for me, 8 is faster than before.

Hi Kpex:

Welcome to the fun - coming out of an Evo, I'm guessing "drive it like you stole it" isn't going to be a concept you have trouble understanding.

There's a pretty solid Chicago meet group that formed from here that you should check out - the name of it is EVOLV-Chicago, and the RX-8 club user that is the organizer of it is RedSheDevil (and she's pretty cool tool) - I've only been to one quite awhile ago as the meets seem tuned to young single people than old married farts like me, but I hear they get a good turnout.

Welcome to the fun and PM me if you have questions. I have an 04 that I bought new and have about 41000 miles on it.

Thanks for a nice welcome guys.

Well, tomorrow I am gonna be doing all the fluid changes myself.
Any particular tranny and diff fluid you guys recommend?

Is conventional better or synthetic recommended?
I know the rx's motors are prone to heat so I am guessing synthetic should be
better for the motor.

Correct me if I am wrong guys.
