New proud owner of a S2 RX8

I hear you, man. On my MS Protege I have Mazdaspeed adjustable "green" struts with Espelir springs. It has a beautiful stance and composure, but I'd felt that it was a waste, because I never really put that combo to good use on the track. Instead, I had to **** every hour due to the pounding on my kidneys. That's why I'm hesitant of coilovers.
With coilovers is different - i think. They usually come with better shocks with better valving. Some are even adjustable - although many people just dial them one time and never touch them again. The point is that with coilovers there's more room for dialing the ride to what you really like.
The mistake that many people make with lowering springs - at least what i see on this forum - is that they get lowering springs and keep the factory shocks. That's a good recipe for a poor ride (and also prematurely worn out steering/suspension parts if the drop is really aggressive).
My 40th AE came with Bilstein shocks from factory. Bilsteins are known for having a stiffer valving. As it is, my car's suspension is a bit stiffer than a base model RX-8 - which I like - but I admit on bumpy roads I can feel it on my lower back.
So...if I were to get lowering springs in my car, I would definitely NEED to find the right shocks to go with those springs.
Hope you are enjoying your ride so far!

Exactly!! I really think suspension upgrades should be based on performance needs not looks.

Installed the intake and the mid pipe. I might have to add a 3rd resonator on the catback portion. I can feel a bit more mid range power, but the top end is a bit dull, still. Just waiting on the new spark plugs, hopefully that'll liven up the top end. Also, i've adjusted the clutch pedal for less travel which helped a lot with the shifting, because there's no lag between the engagement of the clutch after shifting.
