A New Recall?
I took my car to the dealership the other day cuz the belts needed to be tightened and they did a recall on the car.
This is what it states on the invoice:
E** Recall #MSP16
Cause: Recall
XXDOZXFX SB 01-013 / 08 MSP 16 - Engine Lack of Power
FC: 9999
Part# 7777-18-029
Count: 0
Claim Type: A
Auth Code: A0805A
46300 Reprogram PCM to latest calibration.
Anyone hear of this recall? and what it is?
I had the last recall done to my car when they changed the spark plugs but that's it. . . . .?

Yes.. its been out since late december.. just try searching for "msp16" and you will get a myriad of results.
Simply enough, it was a ecu reflash that altered the operation of the omp at certain times.. Mazda continuously trying to solve the lubrication problem.
edit: I should add that it was released in late December but didn't come to light as a full blown recall until mid-March.

Second, it increased the OMP rate(again) to see if it can aid the premature wear of the center of the apex seals.
third, it advance the start up timing to aid engine start up when its hot.

The flash came out mid-late November, but not official a recall until Mid-March, I guess they do it like this so the RX-8 will not flood the dealerships across all the states.

ok. another question, Im the original owner of my car and i obviously love it. how long would you say our engines will last? i've only owned mazda. 626, then protege now the 8.
My 626 had over 300,000 miles on when when i got rid of it,
and my protege had over 150,000 and was still running great.
In your opinion will the 13b last just as long if not longer?
The reason i say this, at my work there's a new guy that decided to talk **** about the 8's behind my back. then my co worker told me what he said...
He's an ex car salesman so he thinks he knows all there is to know about cars.
But he was all saying how 8's constantly leak oil, and asked my co workers if my engine has blown up cuz' the rotarys suck.
I confronted him and told him he's a moron and that they dont leak oil, that they consume it for the apex seals and that rotary engines will last just as long as a piston engine if you take care of it.
Oh, and after having the recall done on your car, what changes if any did you notice?

Expo's engine got rebuilt just after 105K miles. His engine was still running when he brought it in, but the rebuilder found a fair amount of wear on the eccentric shaft bearings as well as signs of uneven wear on the apex seals from a presumed lack of lubrication. Now, he has been running his in races on the odd weekend so there is some hard use in there, but from that analysis, I would think that with care 150K miles is about what they'll do with perfect maintenance. That's just my opinion of course. It will be interesting to see what more data shows as more engines get well over 100K miles.

This is NOT a recall. It is a service bulletin. If it was a recall, owners would have received a letter from MNAO. That means, in theory at least, that the procedure will not be applied to a car unless the owner reports certain problems. However, most reasonable dealers will do the update for you anyway if you ask.

Confirmed by our *On-the-Forum* tech Kevin.
and I just got a card saying I need to go do the recall ... planning to go let Kevin to do it plus a few things need him to check ...

How about posting a copy of the "card" from Mazda corporate calling this a recall and telling what the recall is all about? Short of that, I stand by my comments--buddy!

Rotary Powered Countryboy
Hey guys I just contacted my Mazda Dealer and I asked him what has been done and I haven't had any Reflash done. I'm hoping to get in to have this current one done soon. I was just wondering if thsi will cause any mpg loss or will it in the long run help with that.

He's an ex car salesman.
So why do you care at all what he says about anything?
If you do care, the proper response is to laugh and shake your head. Maybe throw in "Isn't that cute."
If you confront him or rebut, you've lost. Next thing you know he'll make fun of what you eat for lunch.

For about a month up to three days ago, I could log onto the Mazda web-site and find a "Recall Warning" for the MSP16 reflash. That warning is now gone.
I apologize to Go48, and I have no idea whether this thing is a recall or not at this point. It was listed as a recall on that web-site and some members have gotten recall warning notices from dealers.
Personally, I think that Mazda can eat my shorts for making a liar out of me. I've had it. The are f^&*ing *(^&*%^(*&, and that is all that I have to say about the matter.

I just bought my RX8. I had it checked out by the local Mazda dealership prior to closing the deal. I noticed the recall/tsb on the carfax that I ran. I brought this up at the Mazda dealership and they performed the reflash right after I purchased the car. I didn't have to complain about "loss of power". The guys at the service department here seem to be pretty easy going.
