New RX-8 vs. '03 Jetta W/E?
Please have patience as I write my first post...
I was having my oil changed in the Jetta and decided to take a test drive in an RX-8. WOW!!!
I loved it. My only concern is mileage. In the Jetta I can get 30 mpg on the highway anywhere from 65-85 mph. I am very concerned my money is going to go into the gas tank as I drive ~50 miles (round trip) to work every day.
I spent some significant time reading this forums' "satisfied/dis-satisfied" thread and the consensus is that mpg is anywhere between 16-21.
Tell me it ain't so!
Also, I read about "flooding" and oil consumption. I know the rotary injects oil, but how often should the oil be checked?
Thanks for the patience and the read....

I have a GT 6spd and I get between 15-22mpg. With 15 mpg occurring during my last fill-up, and I got 22 mpg by driving from Reno to the Bay Area mainly on 6th gear. I average 18 mpg. I have 5500 miles on the car since May 16 and have had no flooding problems or any major problems, although a friend of mine had his 6spd flooded at a valet parking lot a month ago. I fill up the oil every 1500 miles, it's really no problem at all. Whatever "negatives" the car has are blown away by it's countless positives.

Assuming 21-23 MPG vs 30 MPG, 50 miles/day * 5 days/week at $2/gallon = $5-7 extra for gas per week.
It hurts because it's such a visible cost, but it's really not that much of an additional expense.

VooDoo...
On paper your decision is simple. However, I would say the 8 is the most enjoyable drive I have ever owned. It's a spots car, the gas mileage is as expected. As for oil..not a big deal at all. Every car needs different types of TLC, oil every 2-3k or so is this cares need.
Before my 8 I owned an '03 Mustang GT. Ths gas mileage was terrible! But therewas no trade off, the ride was unenjoyable also!!
The point is, the extra for shillings per week will not worry you when you walk outside to your 8, get in, fire up and ZOOM..ZOOM.
Good luck.

If cost of fuel is of paramount importance, don't get the 8. It is really not good on MPG. You would hate to spend the money for the 8 and regret it. It's not that fun to drive.

After 14000 miles, my mileage has settled at about 18-19 in suburban driving, 23-25 on the highway. If it were me, the extra 5-10 bucks a week is a small price to pay to have so much fun behind the wheel in the 8

VooDoo,
I have a Jetta GLX and an 8. The Jetta is a terrific car but it can't hold a candle to the 8. If you can afford the extra dollars for gas, there really is no contest. (I'm selling the Jetta. The 8 has spoiled me.)

Thank-you!
After reading the replies I sit, anxious to speak with my insurance folks Monday morning!
I will take a second test drive, with a bit more seriousness to the purchase and look around for any rebates/deals Mazda may be offering.
It's also a good feeling knowing that there's folks like you out there to help with questions and concerns.
Thanks again and I hope to write soon with a post titled "Got My New RX-*"!!!

My wife's automatic 8 is getting around 23mpg when she drives to and from work. Around town and short drives she only gets around 16, especially if I am driving it too. :D I am thoroughly convinced it could get 24-25 on the open freeway on a long trip.

Dont wont to flood, Warm up your car.
Check your oil every fill up to be on the safe side.
Every sports car needs gas and there for dont get great gas mpg. I would spend $30. to top off my RX-8 then $50. on a SUV...

I consitenly get 18-19 mpg- unless I'm really on it- we also own a Jetta (04), it gets around 30-35mpg- no contest. The fun to drive factor, is also no contest, with the 8 just a blast to drive, it compells you to have fun, fits like a glove.
