Smile New to RX-8's

Hello all,

Just thought I'd introduce myself to the forum. I'm new here and have been lurking about for a while trying to absorb as much information about these cars as possible. Mainly, I've been reading a lot of the posts having to do with the idiosyncracies of these cars (problems in some peoples' eyes). Anyway, just trying to educate myself on RX-8's as I am considering buying one once I get back home from this deployment. Kinda like a nice reward for myself.

Well, I guess I'll be seeing everyone around the forums here.

regards,
Joel

Welcome, i did the same for myself when i got done with my deployment. It's a real nice car that's very enjoyable to drive. Like many other cars it has it pros and cons, wich you can read about on this site. I've owned two RX8's so far with no regrests.
Come back home safe.

Hello again,

I'm out here in Afghanistan right now. Hopefully, I'll be home before the summer starts.

I don't know that I'm going to sink all of my hard earned cash into a car after re-deploying, but I definitely would like to buy something newer and fun to drive. RX-8's seem pretty cool. I really enjoyed watching them race around Laguna Seca a few years back.

I guess I could start off with one question for you guys. How tune-able do you guys feel that your RX-8's are? In reading quite a few posts on these forums, it seems that not much can be done to the rotary engine besides turbo-charging it for big HP gains. Apparently, doing anything beyond basic exhaust system upgrades and an intake the owner risks causing detonation in the combustion chamber. Of course, I am completely new to rotaries so most likely I'm just missing something glaringly obvious.

regards,
Joel

That's the impression I get too, although it is worth saying that Cobb Tuning is coming out with an AccessPort for the RX-8, and I expect good things. (I had an AccessPort for my WRX, and Cobb was excellent.)

Thanks for serving, BTW.

vinazzuro -

That AccessPort deal is pretty cool lookin'. I did a google search just to see what it was. Seems like it would be immensely helpful in tuning a vehicle outfitted with the rotary engine. I like how Cobb has a whole section of MAPs available for download. The valet and anti-theft ones could be particularly helpful.

I am really interested in the RX-8. I always loved the turbo RX-7's back in the day but could never afford one. The wife is giving me the blessing on the RX-8 because I was able to convince her that it is a 4-door and we could fit a baby seat in the back. Otherwise, I'd probably be trying to get one of the FD RX-7's.

One other question for you guys. Why does the resale on these cars seem to be comparatively lower than their "competition?" As in, didn't most RX-8's originally retail close to $30K? Searching on Autotrader.com shows quite a few for sale that are in the $15K range after only being three or four years old. What gives? Not that I'm complaining as a potential future buyer.

Anyway...I'm just out here doing what I can for what I think is right. Hopefully, there will be an RX-8 waiting for me when I get home.

regards,
Joel
