New to rx8, and a few questions.
Hi,
I'm new to your forums.
I have a mazda miata and i plan on buying an rx8 within the next couple months.
The reason i want an rx8 is because i think it'll be a great car in my future. Im only 19 BTW. I was thinking about getting an S2000, but i prefer the 8 because its a 4 seater. and thats what caught my attention. Its a sporty and luxurious car, that i've been looking for.
1. so i've "heard" that u have to take extra care of the engine. not a problem. just wondering how much care.
2. buy from a used auto dealer, new car from mazda dealer, or a used one from a private party?? i would like the cheaper priced alternative (but dont want an engine that hasnt been taken care of), so what do u think would be better??
3. How long will an rx8 last me with proper maintenance?? and is proper maintenance expensive.
thanks in advance. I hope to be part of the rx8 club soon.
Peace

welcome! as far as questions 1 and 3 go daily maintenance is not bad at all just checking oil levels and adding oil when necessary(renesis engine is designed to burn oil to lubricate seals so its normal to burn it off). also you just have to be careful with flooding the engine. you just have to make sure the engine if up to operating temperature before you shut it down. if you start it to move out of the driveway or something you have to warm it up and then shut it down. other than that it changing oil every 2500-3000 miles, rotating tires, etc. we have several 100k miles rx8s running around. i'm sure others will have something to add but thats a start

1) actually dont take extra care of the engine. drive her rough and tough. It is how the motors were designed to run (just make sure its warmed before driving her like its stolen). the rotary engines were not designed to be driven like a grandma grocery getter. Just make sure about every other gas fill-up you check the oil levels and add as needed. the rotary engine has oil injected directly in for lubing purposes for the rotors.
2. if you have the option of a mazda dealer around you, get a mazda qualified 8. definitely get the extended warranty if offered at any dealer you pick it up from. if you buy from a private party make sure to do some research with mazda and how you can go about adding an extended warranty from a 3rd party warranty provider or mazda directly.
3. someone on this board just hit the 150,000 mile marker and has only done the typical maintenances, brakepads, oilchanges as necessary (the typical vehicle maintence requirements).
If you are good to her and give her hell once in awhile, she will last you quite some time.
and for future reference, search is your friend. as most questions you will have, have most likely been posted here (if not numerous times).

alrighty then.
u 3 pretty much convinced me. some people make it sound like the engine is....."fragile." I guess its just like any other engine in a way. Proper maintenance = Happy car = happy driver. haha
thanks again

I would suggest a search, but that can be confusing. Instead, just click on the *New Posts* button at the top of the screen. Read all of the posts on the first page. If that frightens you, then follow Car And Driver's advise, above. If not, welcome.
