I use 91 here in California (max octane readily available). The lowest I would ever think of putting in is 89, but the difference is usually only 10 cents a gallon. It really isn't worth it IMHO.
I am not as picky in terms of gas though as long as it is a major vendor. I usually put ARCO in because it is owned by BP and in California gas is pretty regulated.

Different people have had different experiences with various octanes - test to see what seems to work for you.
I personally always use 93 (US rating)
One thing to remember though - if you do decide to "premix" with 2-cycle, this WILL lower you octane (see link), so I would run at least mid-grade if you do premix.
