so many giving chris a hard time. I know you guys are trying to make him see what's best financially, but I do see chris's point.
If what he's saying is true and he can get into the same payments for a new rx as he was paying for the matrix, I think it will work out ok. Yes, he will be losing money but the choice is to lose money driving a matrix for 48 more months or paying the same and driving a rx8 for 60. That's a difference of 12 months at $550 a month...well there's your 7 thousand dollar difference...
Would you pay 7 thousand to drive around in a rx8 for 5 years?
I think I would...
Also I would add that just because he pays 24k on the car doesn't mean it isn't worth more. I paid 24k for mine with original sticker price just under 32k. If my 8 gets totalled today, my insurance company says my 8 w/mileage is worth 29k and change.
If I got a great deal on the car and bought one for $100, does that mean it's only worth $100...of course not. NADA will tell you what the cars worth regardless of what you paid.

this is gonna be my last flip.......im planning on making more than 550 a month payments any way to put more towards the principal....but hell yeah i would much rather drive around in a hot sports car than a family wagon......when i got the trix i was kind of desparate....now this is purely choice....i know the financial situation and i thank you for pointing out its downfalls but it is worth it to me....if you were in my situation wouldnt you do the same?.....a few people agree with me on this that i know....im not the only one...but now i know there are a few people in here that look out for others and i can say i will be proud to be part of this forum

In my honest opinion, the handling is amazing. The mileage is so-so, the acceleration is linear and awesome. The looks (both interior and exterior) are to die for.
Modifications just aren't happening as people had hoped... I am not certain too many people are getting more than 20 or 30 horsepower without forced induction, and those that are using forced induction aren't getting more than 60 or 70 more horsepower. If you want a car that will accept modification, the rx-8 probably isn't for you. There is far better bang for the buck.
Reliability, I think most of the issues have been solved by mazda, but I don't think any of the issues were terribly serious. Like you have seen, most of the gripes are about mileage. If you can handle that, the car is probably a good car for you.
That's my .02

I have heard a story or two of side seals just not being able to take the abuse.
I'm not an expert, nor have I tried to force induct my rx-8.
I am, however, willing to accept the fact one way or another, because the car flat out rocks either way. And I have many many miles to go before I consider a FI kit anyway.
Nobody was getting more than 350 horsepower out of the 350z after the first year, either.
Some of it is learning curve, I am sure. But I will be (pleasantly) surprised if we see 500-600 horsepower rx-8's with renesis engines.

No idea how it is in the US, but in Germany the RX-8 is an expensive hobby. Fuel is €1,14 per liter here, insurance is €1.500 a year (after ten years or so without accident, security training and other bonusses included).
So from my point of view this car isn't exactly the right choice if you want to save money.
On the other hand, this car is the best you can get if you prefer handling over torque, uniqueness over the hp rat race and innovation over everyday concepts. This car is a bloody miracle in terms of making the driver feel good. People keep telling the car would be slow, the car in fact feels slow because power is so perfectly under control. In fact this is one real fast car if you know how to drive it and if the road is not just a straight line.
Quality is not an issue as well, I use mine as an everyday ride to work and back, leading to 34.000 kms in eight months so far, with only one flood'n'flash experience that was perfectly taken care of by Mazda.
You mentioned snow in your first post. Snow becomes a serious problem if it's more than 20 cm. The last two days we had heavy snow fall here and the small FWD boxes had far less problems than I did in the little road that leads to my garage. Otherwise, with winter tires, the car is great in winter conditions and braking is exceptionally good.
If I was in your situation, well, for the monetary aspect I'd have my doubts. For the fun aspect, I've made my choice 8 months ago.
