Newbie need some help

Ok as my name/sig/avatar say I am an eclipse fan!!!!!! But I'm thinking of trading in my eclipse for an RX-8 so I come to you for some input.....

My eclipse is a 2.4L non turbo convertable. I love the car but me and the misses are going to start a family soon and she is sold on the 4 door thing. I went today and test drove one and like it!!! I think it would benifit us both but I would like to know What you think!?

I first looked at this one at the cs auto show here in town and loved the kit!!! Thats what drew me in then while i was there i looked harder and like what i saw........ here are some pix of what I'm talking about

front view

side view

sorry so blurry but heres the back end

This is NOT the exact car I will buy but it is the one i was looking at. I am interested in the sport model I'm simple like that. Thanks

No offense to those who have the veilside kit, it's just not my thing. Those wheels are horrible at that.

Anyways. It's a great car. Just brace for the gas prices as Rotaries don't have the best mpg. Very roomy though! Goodluck with your decision.

I can't speak to the family thing, but I know there are plenty of dads on this forum that will probably chime in about it being a nice compromise car (can really toss it around when you dont have the kiddies, but will be spacious enough and safe for the kids when you do have them).

I can tell you one of the reasons I bought the car was because it can hold 4 people plus some luggage when I need it to.

Mileage is bad, the engine is oil injected so you have to monitor oil levels, and you will end up becoming obssessed with the car and spending more money on it than you should. Those are just some things to keep in mind. I'll let the more experienced drivers chime in at this point (8000 miles and counting for me)

Thanks for your input Tom. I actually have a 5yr old that I had in the eclipse and that had a smaller back seat and only a 2 door. But as far as becomeing obssessed I drive an eclipse I know all about that. Just figured I would keep that away from the misses!!! hehehehehehe.

So the RX-8's dont get good gas mileage? I that they were good on it!! I get 400miles to a tank of gas in my eclipse now on 87gas and a 13gall tank ( i think its 13 gall) What do the 8's get?

It is soooooo ugly. Those wheels wouldn't look good on a Matchbox car.

You'd be hard pressed to reach 300 miles on a 15.9G tank.

Gas stinks, I get 180 mile with a full tank so thats like 40 buck .
It a sport car come with the territorry.
I have a 8 year old and he fit find in the back , so that won't be a problem.
The car handles great .
You'll get plenty of looks.
I enjoy the car very much.

I average around 280 - 320 miles per tank running 93 octane with about 50/50 city/highway driving. my highway cruising speed is usually between 70 and 80 MPH. When I use the heater or A/C though, mileage plummets. Last tank of gas I ran the heat most of the time and I got about 240 miles to the tank.

n00bs..

miles per tank = too lazy to hit the trip button and use a calculator on the next fill up.

Is everyone so lazy? Miles per tank is semi quantitative, which means "useless."

Miles per gallon (as an average over several fillups) is the only way to compare TWO DIFFERENT CARS. jebuz..

And the RX8 gets crap gas mileage in the city compared to a weak, DSM, crank-walking, non-turboed, 2.4L, 4 banger. Ok on the highway though.

speaking of lazy, does it seem to anyone else that the search function has been forgotten? to the OP - if you're worried about the misses, check out the sticky threads and FAQs then start asking some questions. there is also an exterior section for body kits so you can see plenty of veilsides there.

I bought mine because it was the best sports car for hauling around 2 kids, one of which is in a rear facing seat.

If you want slightly better milage, and 4 doors, + room... check out the Mazdaspeed 3 as an alternative. Doesn't have the looks or drivability as the 8, but it may work for you.

Another thing to consider is the HP loss in the high altitudes, I don't know if this would affect MPG as well.

michael

ps. Passed through Colorado Springs last summer, nice mountain roads coming in from the east.

You'll get 20 mpg on the highway and alot less in the city. My advice buy the 8. You won't care!

I routinely get 300+ in 14-14.5 gallons, it depends how you drive. It will be significantly less than the 4cyl eclipse though, but a lot nicer

Go give it a test drive, you won't care about the mileage (see my user title)

If you're pinching pennies, the 8 is not for you.

Hey guys and gals thanks for the info!!!! I really do appretiate it.

As far as the pict I posted that was the car I saw at the auto show!!! NOT THE ONE I WANT!!! I agree the rims look like @$$!!! I like the body kit but I have to get the car before I talk body kit!!!!

I DID test drive the car and I did like it but I will still care what my gas mileige is!!! My eclipse has an engine cylinder issue and is still getting better gas mileage from what i'm hearing you guyz talk about.

I also would like to say I come from www.team-2g.com and I know all about the search button. But its never easy to navigate and I get better answers asking direct.
