Newbie Questions...

Hello all!

I just got a red one today...picking it up next week. I CAN'T WAIT!!!

Anyway, I have a few questions. The answers are probably somewhere on this forum but the search didn't do me any good.

1) So dealer says it's good to warm up the rotary engine before driving. Question is for how long or until it drops to a certain RPM?

2) Do I need to "cool down" the car or let it sit for a while before shutting it off?

3) What are some things I need to watch out for? This is my first rotary engine car :p

hehe thanks to you all! I think part of the reason why I bought it is because of this forum Really close to buying a R32 but I'm sure 8 will blow me away!

Congrats, post picts when you get it.

1. Yes, should warm it up. If you kill it while it is cold you take the chance of flooding it.
2. If the car is warm you can just turn it off. No need to "cool down"
3. Check your oil every two fill ups, get used to attention from other drivers, and ignore all of the ricers that want to street race.

1. Ditto on warming up. Time depends on the ambient temperature, I would only warm one up for a minute (while closing the garage door) in the summer, maybe three minutes in the winter. Warming up is good for any engine, and also helps prevent flooding in a rotary.
2. Just shut it off if it is warm. If in doubt, shut it off while holding the rpm at about 3000rpm. That 'evacuates' any excess fuel from the engine. You don't need to do this every time, only when shutting the engine off cold.
3. Same as above, oil is the life of this engine. If you don't have oil, or dirty oil, you don't have compression. Keep a close eye on it, and the car will look after you fine.

Oh wow! I didn't know it's bad to shut the engine off cold! Thanks for the info!!

As for the oil, what did you mean check the oil on two fill ups? Did you mean I have to consistently fill up the oil every once in a while?

Also another question :P What kinds of oil you use? How often do you change it?

Thanks! you guys are very helpful!!

Rotaries use small amount of oil, if driven hard, it will use a bit more. You can use up to a quart every 1500 miles, just check it every other fill uo, no big deal. 5W20 oil, dino. No synthetic.

I wished I could get 1500 on a quart of oil. When I first got my 8 I was having to put a quart in about every 600 miles. It seems to be getting better. I now have nearly 6000 mi. and the last time I had to put in a quart was after 980 miles. I'm hoping mine will eventually get to 1500 b/4 quart of oil needed.

Wow, I haven't heard this one before. I change oil every 5000 miles, and add a quart at 2500. Even then, I'm only halfway from the high to low mark on the dipstick.

You don't need to warm up extensively, as long as you don't shut down cold. The warm up advice you're getting is "just in case" you stall when putting in gear. If you're confident you won't stall, just warm up a few seconds, then off you go. Don't shut down cold as you might flood (you probably won't, but there's a small chance then it sux if you do.)
