News Flash: Deers And RX8s Dont Mix!
so im headed home to see the parents tonight and before i know it theres a dead deer in the road. if i go left im off the road, right is into a truck and i dont want a tire to run over it so i take my chances. i made it about a mile. no body damage except the under trim in the front, but i went and dumped my coolant. theres a tiny hole in the radiator, but not much so im not sure if i killed a hose. it didnt drop all at once, so it may have been just that small hole. theres a cross brace about half way back thats bent too, but other than that i dont see anything. i think i got lucky, but i guess well see on monday...

Ouch ! But , you are really lucky the thing was already dead ...think what would have happened if it hadn't been . Deer and cars never mix , and usually the car loses . Good luck to you

Ouch!! I have a feeling there will be more damage than you think!! Not to be the guy to add insult to injury, but bent cross members and leaking could be the start!
Good luck!!

Sorry to hear about the damage. I almost hit a gallon can of adhesive lying in the road. A truck went over it But I knew I could’t so I served into the left lane and missed it, but ran though a strip of the adhesive in the road. You guess it. When I stopped I had black adhesive all down the right side of my Red car. It took me 5 hours to get rid of it.

my digital camera pretty much sucks and it needs to be up on a lift to really see anything. as i said, looking at the car youd never be able to tell anything was wrong.
and r8ped8, that might be the corniest thing ive ever heard. i like!

You might have just loosened the lower radiator hose - I doubt hitting that deer would punch a hole in it.
The cross member's not a good sign though. If you bent that cross member appreciably, then that means the two points that it attaches to have been pulled inward, which means the entire front structure can be well out of whack.
I hit a center divider curb ages ago in an old vee-dub Scirroco. In addition to knocking oil pan off the engine and cracking the transaxle case, I also bent the front crossmember that tided the front frame horns together. They cut the old one out and when they went to weld the new one in, they had to take it to a frame alignment shop to get the frame horns pulled back apart to original specification. Car was never the same after that.

the cross member is a transmission brace, its just bolted in by four bolts. it got bent down when it got cought on the deer, i dont think it fucked anything up. the car drove perfectly fine afterwards, it just was losing coolant. the more i look at it i think i got really lucky and will just need a new hose somewhere, brace and underpan trim. of course im sure now theyll call me on monday and say i somehow did $5k worth of damage to the car...

Oh, Deer!
Yeah, I know. Smart A$$
Seriously, sorry to hear about the damage to your 8 I'm more than aware of the pain associated with having a wounded 8. To say the whole experience sucks would be an understatement.
Personally I think that deer can be a really dangerous menace. (I know, potentially dangerous statement. I'm walking on a thin line and I don't want to be on the receiving end of flames accusing me of being a Bambi hater). Yes they are cute, and they have great P.R. that is dangerous to go up against, you know, that Disney movie.
Still, it seems that one could make the argument that there are residential areas where they thrive and have reached very high population density numbers due to the lack of natural predators in the residential areas to control their numbers.
Then there is this whole thing where they like to jump in front of cars--especially if it is dark. Sometimes, they are a little slow on the jump and will jump into the side of your car--yes, it really happened to me. I grew-up in an area where there were lots of deer. And, I still enjoy seeing the deer on the hillside across from my house...

Clearing a deer, hell I couldn't even clear the armadillo on the road with all four legs sticking stragiht up in the air. Took a chunk of him with me on the cat heat shroud for days. Smelled really bad, but eventually burned off.
I hope you get it fixed, with minimal damage.

initial damage is $1100, but im going to stop by tomorrow b/c that seems rediculously high. highlights include radiator and condensor. however, they tried to tell me that i needed a new front air dam and license plate holder, neither of which my car had in the first place. im going to hit up the junk yards and see if they have any 8s.

We don’t have armadillos around here. But we do have skunks and I’m sick of them. I usually pass a ripe & flattened one every day on the way to work. Sometimes there will be 3 of them, but that’s during “Skunk Season.” I don’t know what is going on with the little b@sterds, but their flattened @$$es are all over the place in the Fall. Then it’s a real treat when someone nails one in front of your house. Even better is that it’s going to stay there until you go out there and Haz-Mat the D@mn thing.
Oh, and the coup de grace is when I came home late one night to a dead-@$$ skunk in front of my house. Looked like he had lost a battle with a SUV. It was late, and I didn’t want to deal with the thing. So I kept the windows shut on the front of the house. The next morning I discover—to my delight—that some sick-@$$ animal had dragged the thing onto my front stairway and torn it apart. There was even this clean little skunk thighbone amidst the pile of assorted rank skunk parts and fur. I don’t know WTF would eat a skunk or just tear it up for recreational purposes—Mother Nature has a sick sense of humor.
And while I’m on a Skunk Rant: It’s just wonderful when you come home to a hot house after a long day at work, open the windows, and turn on the whole house fan. While you are standing in the kitchen trying to figue out what to microwave for dinner, a skunk way up in the hills takes notice that you are home and there is a good breeze going through your house. So it rapidly decends from the hills, and strategically places itself under an open window—usually the bedroom since I have to sleep in there. It explodes. This has happened more times than I can count since I moved into this house 4 years ago. Okay, I’m done. I feel better now.
