The next RX compared to the current Lotus Evora S
I've been doing some thinking...
345 HP, 295 lb-ft torque, and 3171 Lbs.. for $90K CAD 9.19 Lb/HP
Suppose the next RX can hit a modest 300 HP, 200 lb-ft torque, and with Mazda's committment to gram-strategy bring it down to 2800 Lbs... 9.33 Lb/HP
Selling this thing for $40k CAD (same price as current offering)
Everyone says the current RX has handling that rivals if not offers 80 - 90% that of a Lotus.
With those power-to-weight ratios... it could potentially offer 90% of the Evora S's performance for 1/2 the price!
Am I dreaming, or is this logic totally possible?

Mazda needs to make a mazdaspeed version.. with a three rotor. That would be worth 50 grand. And then it would be running against cars twice as much as it and would have a lot of potential. You would have drifters track guys and drag guys all interested.

Lets be realistic here... That comment on 250 HP in the 16x is totaly unrealistic.
They made 232 HP in 2004 with the 13B 1.3L
With a bump in displacement to 1.6L, direct injection, and 8 years of technology advancement, they cannot ONLY JUST make 250 HP, that would be laughable.
The minimum the 16x would be 300HP.. MINIMUM....

I know i read somewhere that mazda actually got 300+ hp readings on their new 1.6 engine but where going to tone it down to help with emissions or something like that. Couldnt find that article but here are these two that say it will be 250-300 hp. I know they are old but its still a light at the end of the tunnel. lol

I hate to **** in the camp fire but I think the rotary is an engine of the past. With the tightening fuel economy standards and the reliability issues which resulted in a bad image of the rotary it is very unlikely that Mazda will again put out a car with a rotary.
An increase of 30% might hit 300hp but would only increase combined real world MPG to around 22 assuming they hit 30%, my bet would be closer to 20% based on direct injection increase in other cars. Either way we are dealing with an engine that is some 16% less energy efficient then a piston engine so it will be a hard sell in future with $5/gallon gas.
IMHO

The next Rotary: the RX9!
Check August 2011 issue Motor Trend, concept art of new RX-9. Lighter, smaller, faster, hybrid??!!! built on MX5 platform, true 2-door. based on the SHINARI concept w/different front end. Article didn't mention price on this new beastie, or the weight of the car. any new info anyone finds, I'd love to see.

Rx-9
The engine suppling the power for the hybrid set-up in this beast is a 2 rotor, not sure if current in the RX-8 or the 16x. And, yes..I love Mazdas, and no car i've ever driven is more fun than the 04 blue beauty, would get RX-9 over the Evora. If I was going to go with a Lotus, it would be an Elise.
