^^^ 100% agree. Its so funny to hear the comparisons. I mean its no secret that an 04 RX8 can be had for sub 15 grand. So why is it that people ask "hmmm, corvette, or an RX8??" haha, this car is something else!

The GT-R is a supercar! but all those MT lovers or AT haters, the GT-R is not a MT!. MT is done. its Over! We are in the future now guys, that is why i love my AT 6-speed adaptive shift with racing-inspired paddles on the steering wheel allows me to make quick shifts without taking my hands off the steering wheel. Or, leave it in AT mode and let the car do the shifting like the GT-R has. Its The Best of Both Worlds.

^ well, yes, for other cars except rx8, because rx8 AT is slower than their MT counterpart, all other car with SMG, SST etc AT can be and some are faster than MT

Not when you're going to do some high performance driving.

Those *new* AT tranny can minimize driver error (miss-shift, wrong rpm, etc). and yes it can shift faster. but who cares.

Pretty funny in Dec's Best Motoring, the Lambo got a Check engine light. and on the Last one, the SST overheats. LOL

Even if it's a mazsport turbo, I'd choose the GTR.

I think a lot of people in this thread don't understand the differences between Manual and Automatic transmissions, hint it's called a torque convertor. THis discussion needs to shift twards the 4 main tranny types if you want a reasonable discussion. There are no longer 2... Now there is the former two, full manual, and full auto with TC, now there is CVT's, and of course automated MANUALS. Ther eis a big difference between a computer operated manual and a fully automatic tranny with TC. The TC is a good 15% power loss, while despite the fact that there isn't a third pedal, the GTR does have a clutch or maybe 2... There are VERY few situations of Driver/Course where a fully manual transmission is faster or desired, hence why all F1 cars have moved to them. I agree it's more fun to drive with a third pedal, but I doubt they will be around for much longer.

Manual trannies have been counted out as dead before, but they hold on because drivers like the level of involvement that gear switching delivers. Yes, high end sports cars have sold automatic transmisssions, and if you want to go fast a mechanically actuated manual trans (tiptronic type) is going to switch your gears a hell of alot faster than you can by hand, however, the involvement level isn't there, and there is demand for that. I mean there are Cadillacs out there with Manual transmissions now, and that was purely a decision to satisify a certain kind of buyer. I do believe that manuals, in the U.S., are in a tenuous position since it is only a small cadre of enthusiasts who want that kind of thing, but we ... I mean they are a vocal group. I haven't owned an auto trans car as my primary driver since I was 16, and that is a frightening number of years ago. Hopefully they will continue to be installed in cars, but I have to agree with Maniac, there is no longer any engineering reason to use them. There is only a marketing reason to continue with the technology at this point. If we enter a recession they might come back further in low end cars because they are significantly cheaper than other kinds of trannies, but for now, it is the vocal minority who keep the manual trans alive in the United States.
