No Acceleration at 3000 RPM

I was coming home from an 8hr road trip ... all of a sudden, I go to pass a car, step on the accelarator ... and NOTHING!

I downshifted, was pushing on the gas, and absolutely nothing was happening ... then my Check Engine Light came on ...

I then realized that my RX8 would only accelarate to 3000 RPM's in any given gear, then it would die out ... as if the throttle would only give the engine so much gas ...

I've been searching for posts on this subject, and the only one I found were people who experienced this in cold weather before the engine warmed up ...

This was in 80 degree weather after driving for 7hrs ... in the middle of the highway!

The coolant gage was normal, so the car wasnt overheating ...

I was only 30 minutes away from home, so I drove home slowly ... when I shut the car off, and turned it back on, everything was normal ...

Any ideas?

Jeremy

Sounds like you car went into some sort of 'limp mode' but there doesn't seem to be any reasoning for why it did. Sorry man. Bring it up to your dealer on your next service.

Couple of things that I can think of off the top of my head just from reading up on the renesis engine.

1. Throttle Sensor problem
2. Metering oil pump for the oil injectors

The PCM is supposed to store codes when the engine light comes on, so your dealer will probably be able to tell you what happened. If you have any faith left in dealers after reading this board, that is.

Thanks for the replies ...

I'm the one that updates my dealer on fixes for my car ... when my CEL light used to come on, I informed them that it was a known issue ... when the fix came in for the A/C for cars made before August 03, I also informed them ...

Each time, I have to wait a day for them to contact Mazda ... then they tell me what I already know from this board

Same thing is happening to my car, Jeremy at 4000 RPM's.

Most likely you have a bad Cat. Convert. The air can't pass through the Convertor adequately enough to justify letting you past a certain RPM.

I sent you a personal message that details this more.

Oh ya, welcome to my nightmare!

I'm not sure this could be it with current technology, but I had the same problem in my '73 Opel GT once... and it turned out to be the capacitor -- > worth about $2.00
