No Demand For RX-8= RARE
Hey guys I called the Mazda dealer on Staten Island and asked them if they were getting any 06 RX-8s in and they said no because there is no demand for them. They have two 05s with a price of $34k going for $26k which is not bad. They are both 6 spd by the way. I have a feeling the RX-8 will become more and more rare.

i know but when i called i thought it is unheard of for a dealer to order not even one example of their flagship model...especially in a larger city such as staten island...sales must be really bad.....does anybody know how many 06's are supped to be built

They never advertise it for one thing. I mean I know it doesnt need to be advertised as much as the Mazda 6, but come on. I can't remember how many times I've had this conversation:
First something will get us on the topic of cars
Random Person: What kind of car do you drive?
Me: A 2004 Mazda Rx8.
Random Person: Oh. What's that?
Me: A small 4 door sports car.
Random Person: Sounds nice, does it have a 4 cylinder / V6?
Me: No it actually has neither, its a rotary.
Random Person: What is that?
From there its nothing but blank stares and "Oh, Ok"
Like I said before I think a little more advertising would help because at least half of the people I talk to have no idea what an Rx8 is.

Sorry guys but the Rx8 is not the flagship of Mazda, it is merely a bunch of engineers' dream that came true. They made the car for US, not the general public and it will never be advertised with such poor mileage per galon. It would not be "green" enough for our times... :-)

Sorry but Mazda put cars in numbers in order to give them a "class" and which, 8 is the highest number right now and yes RX-8 is their Flagship car.
Reason why they dont put ADs for the 8 god knows. but I guess its mostly because people in US are too dumb to try to learn that theres actually an engine with no piston. I've seen ADs about 8 in other countries, but just not US. and I guess the reason they put more ADs for 6/3 than anything, simple. Business. They're selling well and no company will give that up. I will just push push push push push ..... and make $$$.
Oh another thing, they did show the 8 on screen ... I saw this commerical couple of times when I was in movie theater. It was a CX-7 commerical but the first car they show, is the RX-8.
Just so you know.

Unless Mazda can increase the MPG the RX-8 is a doomed vehicle. I really like the car but with gas prices approaching $4 a gallon and trade magazines showing the car getting 13 to 17 mpg over all with a 0-60 time of 6 sec. the general public is going to be turned off by it. Sales have been steadily dropping and Mazda has done nothing to return needed hp or mpg. I hope they prove me wrong but I'm not holding my breath.

Personally, I think that MNAO has its head up its ***. I mean I understand that it makes far more sense to advertise their high volume cars in a high volume media like television and leave advertising the 8 to enthusiast print magazines and the speed channel, but they are completely missing the point. The car market is currently infinitely fragmented, and there is no car which shouldn't see some TV advertising. When people ask about my car, I just show them the four door configuration and their eyes bug out. Most people don't understand motors and couldn't car less, but the doors they get. The 8 is unusual to the point of being unique, and having lived with it for as long as I have, I can think of nothing in this world that I would rather be driving. I've fallen more and more in love with the thing as time has gone by. It's beautiful, smooth, holds alot of stuff and people for its size, and it's tossable. I really don't get why it doesn't sell better. I guess that people are more interested in buying numbers on a page than actually driving a car to see what it's like, and I agree that rising fuel prices will make the car harder and harder to sell. I feel terrible for all the people who aren't driving one. Poor dumb bastards.

true dat, geez people sometimes ask me "what kind of car is that?" Everyone knows the usual conversation between a rotary guy and a person who can't conceive of an engine without cylinders. But besides the point, I get compliments everywhere I go and some people can't believe how cheap it really is. I mean some people thought I paid like $45K+. It's a great looking car, its quick, but MNAO doesn't know how great of a car they've got. Hey, if it makes my 8 more valuable that's sweet, but I'd like to see more on the road.

Sports cars generally aren't advertised much because they appeal only to a niche market. The one exception seems to be the 350Z (which gets basically the same mileage as the 8).
Also, I don't think gas mileage alone is enough to doom the RX-8 because a lot of other vehicles get similar or worse mileage. The Infinity G35, for example, is known for its bad mileage, but you can't swing a cat without hitting one.

I work for a mazda dealership and all i see all the time is kids that can't afford the car coming in here to drive or the few people that come in comparision to the 350z. Everyone talks about how the z is all mighty with its horsepower, yet its not that fast.. i just wish mazda would learn to get the word out on how good of a car this is, who cares about gas milage, its a SPORTS CAR you dont buy it for the milage

Yesterday a coworker asked me "Dude, do your doors open backwards?" I told her they did and showed her on the website. Now she is in love with my car (after learning there is a backseat) and wants one but she can't afford one right now, not even a used one.
I must be one of the lucky ones because my mileage is doing really good. I will have to get gas tonight and it appears to be about 21-22 at this time based on miles and when the light came on compared to the last tank where it got 23.5. My light came on at 287 miles last night.

agreed, the rx8 needs more publicity.. hopefully the fast and the furious will give it just that... even if its to get some more aftermarket products, They need to do something

Personally, I think that Mazda focuses its sales efforts too narrowly on the sport car market. This thing has a back seat that will actually fit adult humans, and the doors will allow one to carry huge junk in the passenger area. I take my bike inside the car, and I've carried a fully boxed brand new window AC unit with it. It handles babies well. If they pushed that information into the general public domain, I think that they could find buyers who weren't young kids but old losers like me. Advertising and the dealer network makes me believe that the root problem is Mazda North America. They have no vision (unlike the engineers at Mazda), and they have been selling budget cars for too long. They brought Mazda in as a budget brand, and they can only see it that way. The vision of the company in Japan and the North American operations have pulled apart and that disconnect hurts them. That's my idiot opinion.

I also think that MNAO doesn't realize what they have with the 8. The ads I've seen promote only that it's fast, but I think they should emphasize how cool and unique the car is. They should position it as a car for those people who want something different and special, not just the average Joe who likes speedy cars.
It kind of bothers me that the RX-8 is selling so poorly, mainly because I'm afraid Mazda will stop producing the rotary engine. If we're entering an era of very expensive gas, it's hard to see how the rotary can survive in the marketplace.
