No future rotary powered cars?

^^^Congress might pass a fuel economy standard of 35mpg, and we all know a rotary engine will never live up to those expectations

Is the end near?.....

Rotary shouldn't have any trouble with that... We've already got a hydrogen engine

If they know how many people are in love with rotary, they'll give them what they want to make the money.
No stopping Rotary.

yes, the rotary engine is still a baby compared to piston engines. there is so much we havent done with it or discovered with it. i have high hopes for it.

Isn't that requirement just an average number for all vehicles in a company's fleet?

I doubt that will ever happen. They have maximized the current technology pretty far with aerodynamics and Direct Injection and the cost to keep gaining efficiency is just going to to keep increasing exponentially. Its going to have to be hybrids, but more likely fuel cells in the future.

lets start recruiting suicide bombers to help us get this technology moving. We'll have a 3 week training course for new recruits... hopefully no one brings live bombs with their training vests.

we can easily convert our car to hydrogen. you just have to find a hydrogen refueling station.

AGREED. there would be no sports cars, suv's, or trucks if this rating were for individual cars. it's an average for a car company, just to make sure all the gas guzzlers are balanced by having enough hybrids and other economical cars in their line-up.

100% fuel cell vehicles are not the way of the future! Alternate fuels are. (such as Hydrogen). But even still its going to be Hybrid in either technology. It has to be.

Too many issues with fuel cells as a viable means of powering a car. Ooops honey we ran out of juice, better call the tow truck to get us to a power source and tell your mother we won't be able to get back on the road for another 8 hours while we "fill up". So lets go spend un-necessary money on this hotel now.

I prefer to take 5-10 minutes out of my life to pump some kind of fuel into my tank. I'd prefer it be some gasoline with some hydrogen.

This is the future. Compressed air engines. They run completely off of compressed air, emit only pure water and when paired up with their air compressor that is powered by the engine(like an alternator) bam... vehicle that never needs to be refueled. Only problem with this technology is I doubt all the oil/gas companies would ever let it be produced. They'd buy out the company and disband it before they let it go into full scale production. That and since it's such a new technology all the cars are very underpowered. But just like any new technology... given time it will catch up to the other internal combustion engines.

It will not be able to go into production unless they can solve one of the most important safety issue. Running Compressed Air is MORE dangerous than running with a Gas Tank.

When you talk about Compressed air, in order for it to be able to make any *reasonable* power, it has to have a lot of oxygen in there. wow, I wouldnt want to drive around with a bottle of oxygen in my trunk. (or close to pure oxygen)

I don't believe it, that'll be the end to several sports cars.
