No longer so GR8 RX8
I am reaching out to the RX8Club community to help me mourn.
My daughter's P.O.S. 2000 Ford Taurus caught fire last week and took the interior of my garage and my beloved RX8 with it!
Here are pics. Both cars are totalled. Waiting anxiously to see what the insurance settlement is, though I'm unlikely to buy anything else till Springtime anyway...
My only consolation is that thankfully my daughter and grandson were not hurt and I have good insurance...

They say it appears to have clearly originated in the engine compartment and are suspecting some sort of fuel leak.
We'll see...

The fire investigator said that if she had not left the garage door up or the house was a little older or the fire company got there 10 min later, we would have lost the whole house. The garage door shielded the ceiling from the worst of the heat for a while.
The speed and heat of the fire was amazing to me (I was out of town on business). The elapsed time from the time she started the car to the BOOM was about 10 min. The fire company got them withiin 5 min and had the fire under control within 15 min of arrival.

wow...that really sucks. and after being lucky that no one was hurt, you are also lucky that the fire was contained in the garage and didn't burn down you're house. is you're home owner's ins. covering this, or is it the ins. on the taurus?

sorry to hear about that man. Hope everythign can go smoothly down the road from here.
any salvageable parts? I see rotary accents you could at least keep as a souveneir. Not sure how bad the rims are either, but you could save a spare.
At any rate, nothing will replace your 8, so sorry, and hopefully you can get an 06.
or 07 or 0 whatever they're gonna do.

OMG!!
Looking at that hurts so much...
I'm glad that no one was hurt, that is by FAR the most important thing in this scenario.
Good luck with the insurance company (both home and car). Unfortunately we're not likely to see an FI RX-8 any time soon so I'd throw your name in for either a 2006 or get a smokin' deal on another '05.

I already took the chrome fuel door, spare tire and mount, fix a flat kit, rotary valve stem covers and rotary center caps. I could possibly save one tire, not sure if worth it. Three rims are scorched but could possibly be salvaged, one was fine - haven't decided if I'll bother. Waiting to see what I get from insurance settlement...

Thank god everyone is OK... when I read "diaper bag" I couldn't help but think what would have happened if the baby had been strapped into his/her carseat ...
Although a model year 2000 Taurus isn't specifically mentioned here, please investigate the possibility that this fire could have been caused by a faulty cruise control switch. It's a documented problem with a part that was used extensively in multiple models and years, and has caused numerous vehicle fires.

It was very scary - I can't tell you how many times as a parent I had strapped the kids in the car and gone back in the house to get something. Every time I get bummed about the lost property I remind myself we could easily have been having funeral(s) instead...
