Wow you are very lucky, I've seen two other house fires that started in the garage due to a vehicle and both ended up totaling the house. I couldn't believe that your garage was that intact. Oh and here is a bit more interesting info, I have worked about 11 vehicle fires, 10 have been fords, mostly rangers (even a new f150). I'll never own a ford.

Apparently there was a new code for fire resistant materials in garages a few years ago. We were told that if the house was an older home we would have lost everything!

sorry to see that. glad everyone is ok
Also check the nhtsb.gov for complaints about the 2000 Taurus. The insurance co will probably do this but it's just something that you might find helpful.
Did you say that you have three different insurance companies or three different policies? If all of your policies are with the same company they should be willing to accept 1 deductible for this case. Might still be the highest one, like the house but less is better.
Lot's of experience with insurance due to hurricanes. You will have to ask the adjuster they might not volunteer to consolidate the deductible. You might also want to get an independent adjuster out of the phone book. Most insurance cos depend on the customer never reading all the fine print or knowing the state regs. Things seem to go much smoother when you hire your own advocate.

I had one crash in a 1995 Pontiac Sunfire which tore up something bad enough to start a fire under the hood a few minutes later. The airbag had protected me completely so I was out of the car in about 3 seconds with my two-year-old under one arm and long gone by the time the engine compartment was really flaming. However, the lesson wasn't lost on me. If I'd been unconcious I might not have known I burned to death, but my two-year-old strapped in the back was never unconcious and she would have known. <big shudder>
That was my oldest daughter. We quietly mark an extra birthday for ourselves on September 25th each year. By my clock we're on 8 years+ of bonus time so far. However, I find it easy to be of two minds about the whole issue. Everyone understands the <shudder> but at the same time I feel a euphoria - felt it 8 years ago too. I almost wanted to dance when I saw the car burning (after the initial shock) because I wasn't in it. Funny how the mind works, or maybe my mind is just odd.
Good luck getting replacement cars - remember, 30 days (of rental reimbursement from the insurance company) goes by quick!

I can tell you where I am right now on this one:
- 2004 RX8 GT - all options except CD changer and navigation system. I paid $30,100 for it plus tax 9/2004.
- $1,500 in cosmetic add-ons, so $34k in the car total with tax.
- No final offer yet - but they are presently at $26,400 plus tax or $28,578. This represents an average of retail values adjusted for mileage as published by NADA and Red Book (whatever that is). I went online and did Edmunds ($25,917 dealer retail), NADA ($28,025 dealer retail) and Kelly Blue Book ($27,395).
- I submitted a letter from my dealer attesting to the car's pristine condition and have asked for consideration of that and for the aftermarket parts.
We'll see what the come back with. In reality, I can go buy a reasonably similar 2004 for $23k - $25k, so the settlement is not all bad.

actually, there is a new insurance out now, i have seen ads for it, you get replacement value for your car. Allstate IIRC. I could be wrong about the company, but it is now available. Probably costs a lot more.

Using that baseline they pro-rated value of my car for mileage, new tires, some of my add-ons, some of my personal property that was in the car, etc.
Doing it that way makes it almost defacto replacement value by zeroing in on the current market value.
If that are adding sales tax to your settlement (~8% in your county? we are 8.00% in Steuben right now) that is *huge*. My Sunfire settlement was in Oregon so no sales tax there, but sales tax is *thousands* in most locations. Glad to hear they'll cover it Sales tax will be far more than your deductible. How lucky can you be?
Getting back to your first post - glib remarks and proper perspective aside - I'll join you in mourning the loss of your RX-8. It's always a shame when they're cut down so long before their time. Nothing wrong with a keepsake box.

I'm so glad your family (and home!) wasn't hurt in this fire.. so the garage and two cars are toast.. the house and family is OK.
Best of luck in finding suitable replacements for both cars.. glad to see you're still thinking Rotary Rocket for yourself.. mebbe get one for her too?
Oh, and make sure to get the engine block out of the Ford, and toss it through Bill Ford's window, with a note attached

so if someone steels my car or it burns to ashes they would basically replace it with another car that cost arround the same as my car. for example, my car is fully loaded, payed 42,000 after tax, so if my car burns to death they would get me another 2004 with the same options and about the same milage?? its understandable that the car is not gonna be 36,000 no more. but it be the same.
