No more Detonation! *MIAC*

I did this one myself today, used a stainless steel #8 x 1½ in. screw to avoid it corroding in there and getting rust into the system eventually. Total cost... a measly buck and I still have a screw left for whatever I'll never use it for. It keeps the throttle body outright cold.

so this quick removal of the coolant line in the throttle body is okay to do? i live in flroida, and we get some really hot humid days, you can feel the power decrease from the thick air. ill have to try this mod, and see how it does. migh tnot notice a jump in power, but it sounds right..

Also I don't run any coolant. I run straight distilled water with two bottles of redline water wetter. Water wetter has stuff that lubricates the pump. No need for antifreeze since it does the opposite of cool. It just prevents freezing.

redline even sells their own "coolant" that has distilled water, water wetter, it contains no antifreeze, called supercool:

should end up being the same as distilled water with water wetter though.

Do it when the engine is cold it literaly takes a minute to do.

good deal. il do it this weekend.. i do lots of highway driving. its prob. a good 90% of my mileage ... but my job pays :D this shouldnt have any effect on that will it? if its cooler, possibly better gas mileage?

When I purchased my car from Earnhardt Mazda the tech told me that I could use the Reg Unleaded and every once in awhile he wanted me to put some 91. What does this (Marbles I A Can) sound like? Please don't give me a smarta$$ answer saying it sounds like "Marbles in a Can" Please elaborate. I just want to make sure I am not running my car into the ground.

When I do this the only sound I hear is the exhaust and the engine spooling away. I think I might now what you guys are referring to now. Before my 8 I had a Scion tC and when I would punch it I would here like a cracking noise like it was trying to speed up but wanted to take it's time.

The reason we call it MIAC(Marbles In A Can) is because it sounds like you are shaking an empty can with a few marble in it. The can is the rotor housings and the marbles are the apex seals hammering against it like metal against metal. Some call it marbles in a blender, it's loud and you will know it when you hear it. It's preignition in a rotary and not a good thing for a rotary engine.

I'm getting confused...
Over in the Premix thread in the Tech Garage, it's said that the MIAC sound is likely the intake ports rattling due to "relaxed" tolerances. I'm starting to put a lot of stock in that theory, as I hear the MIAC sound on acceleration even when the engine is cold in sub-20 degree temps. My noise CAN'T be from detonation can it? If the issue causing detonation/MIAC is heated air streaming through the intake, how can this be an issue when it's well below freezing and the rattle is present within 30 seconds of starting the car?
Mebbe my MIAC sound isn't the MIAC I think it is.

Here is some pics of one way to do it, its a bypass. I just stopped the coolant from passing through. I found this pic so you can see, look at the sixth pic down and remove the hose as they show and drop in a sheet rock screw where the hose goes on the throttle body and push the hose back on and then slide the clamp back into place again. Of-course do this on a cold engine so you don't get burned. It seals both directions as the screw head was large enough to do the trick.

i did the mod, but mine is slightly different. i didn't cut any hoses or the such...
here's what i did
-used 5/16 vacuum caps +$1.99
-pour in some left over dot5 fluid in the TB passage (to prevent corrosion if needed use in future)
-bought a small fuel filter, but doubled it as just a filter for the coolant by-pass mod. +$3.09
--- no hoses cut what-so-ever. just shoved the fuel filter in between where ROTARYINSIDER uses a 5/16 hose connector. and moved the coolant piping cleverly out of the way. this way, its easy as 1-2-3 if needed to bring back to stock form if bringing car in to the dealer is ever called upon.
the filter was only a buck more than getting a hose tubing connector, so i figured why not. it narrows my trip down to only autozone, instead of hardware store and autozone...
hope those future TB coolant by-pass DIY'ers may find this useful as an alternative mod.
results: added throttle response, cooler intake charge...to some degree, and with the added bonus of having some contaminants filtered out in the coolant system.

^^thanks stealth, delhi.
as to the filter... i don't remember. its an autozone brand.
i went with the cheapest and smallest $3 fuel filter... instead of the MR. Gasket clear glass fuel filter. thats all i remember.
i didn't go with the glass due to obvious reasons...like breaking in the tight space to be installed.
as long as the fitting is 5/16... from messing around with the vacuum caps, if it fits, and if its small enough, then you are fine! and you don't necessarily need to cut the coolant hose. which is my main point i wanted to bring up.
MODERATOR: should i have put this up in the DIY section...or other more appropriate forum?

^^nope... really sorry guys, the pkg was already thrown away.
but like i figured at the time i wanted to by-pass the TB, i was just in a rush and they were out of hose connectors at autozone...
i looked at fuel filters along with the vacuum caps i needed to get to block the TB passages from corrosion... and tested the fitting. it worked.
so the common sense kicked in and told me, " enough coolant circulates thru here to call for a filter... useful or not." AND, "driving down to the hardware store will cost me $1 in gas... aaggghh, why not?"
unfortunately... i still need 1000grit sandpaper from the hardware store. but i'll save that for some other day when i have free time.
meanwhile...the 2 1/2 inch filter was long enough to roll the coolant tubing around w/o necessitating excess tubing cut-off. which was what i intended.
so enjoy the filter mod that came in my spare-of-the-moment thinking

TrochoidMagic, picture would be nice.
Speaking of which, a picture of Old Rotor's screw mod would be nice too.
You guys keep referring to Rotaryinsider ( http://rotaryinsider.com/rx8-59.html ) but what you have done is a different variation. I think it's better if you show a picture of how you did it.

Great thread...so far
I've been having problems with predetonation (Marbles In A Can) for about four months now at 6k rpm's and up. Had the greddy turbo put in about a year ago. Problem went away with about 4 gallons of VP 100 octane gas, but at $7.00 to $9.00 per gallon, I can't afford it.
I did the mod. It took me way longer than 5 min because I couldn't take off the pipe leading to the throttle body cuz of everything connected to it, including a hybrid blowoff/recirc that I would've had to disconnect in multiple places, blah, blah.
Anyway, the mod is working out great for me so far. Drove around until the car was at normal operating temp, then redlined a few times...no predet at all so far. I'll try it again tomorrow when the sun's out. I'm sure a re-tune is eminent, but this $5.00 mod seems worth it.
Ohh, I also disconnected whatever was left of a grounding kit that my car hated! I can't imagine that it had anything to do with my problems, but if someone knows that it might have, tell me why.
Thx.
