not to happy with the 8...

I've had my RX-8 for two months now and love driving it more every single day. I average 15mpg but was aware of that before I bought it. I traded in a Ford F150 (5.4L V8) so I'm used to the gas milage thing. I also had a 2001 Miata with Tein Flex COs that I ended up selling last month simply because I found I was driving the RX-8 all the time. I have also owned two RX7s in the past.
So far my car has been great with the only complaint being the funky noise it makes when starting out and turning at the same time. It's going to the dealer soon to see if it is the rear diff.
If you don't know about keeping the RX-8 try going for a nice drive on a winding road.

i have not regretted my decision once.
yes, the trick is to drive a gas guzzler BEFORE getting the 8, then the mpg wont hurt as much.
i love walking to the parking lot everyday and seeing that sexy titanium gray *** waiting for me to hop in.

When I drive into Toronto from my country house I get about 20-25 mpg. I put her on cruise and stick at 120 kph (I think thats about 70 mph). Mind you, I get passed by echos and mini vans. But highway and city driving is boring anyways.
When I'm driving the country roads I don't care what my mpg is... I'm having way too much fun. Yeah... It's that "manandmachine" driving thing. A rotary car is about shifting and lots a curves!

I'm sorry to hear you made the wrong choice but you need to get a vehicle that will make you happy. I bought my 8 about a month ago and I'm glad I bought what I wanted. My wife wanted a '06 Mustang GT so we ordered one and when it came in I got cold feet and backed out (I'm glad I did). My 15 year old son wanted me to buy the a STS Caddy but when I test drove one it felt too bulky.
In the end my decision to stick to the 8 prevailed even though I can see my wifes face as she sits crammed in the front seat with my 6'1" son in the back with his knees pushed to his chest, I'm still happy because it's MY car and if they don't like to ride with me they can go ride our 4x4 Chevy hog.

Yeah going from a nice gas mileage car to the 8 is a bit of a shock, ESPECIALLY with the gas prices the way they are. I averaged 15mpg mixed when I first got it and now I'm getting about 18mpg mixed. My best EVER gas mileage was a tad bit under 20 (19.8 or something) but that was with like 85% freeway.
I love the car, but the gas prices are making me consider getting a different car when my lease expires. Powerwise it's completely fine for me. I went from a Camry to this car though.
That said, I agree with every one else when I say something sounds REALLY wrong with you. Who buys a stick shift when they hate shifting? My god. And then complaining about gas mileage and then saying you're thinking of trading it for a car with an EPA of 16/20? WTF? If this isn't a thread poking fun at people, I think you better let someone else make purchasing decisions for you.
I would suggest getting a V6 Camry or Accord. That seems to be what you're looking for. Regular gas, pretty hefty horsepower (268 for the new Camry, 244 for the Accord), automatic, and reliable.

I'm still looking into getting this issue resolved with my Mazda dealership, but I have decided either way, I love the car. I was debating on trading it in as well, but decided the pros outweighed the cons.

Now if you trade in your 15mpg mixed RX-8 for a car which gets 20+ mixed and you can trade it w/o having to pay more, I don't see what the problem is. But I do agree that going from a 15mpg car to a 20mpg car but paying $8,000 to do it is pretty stupid.

Some folks just see these cars on the lots and they look hot, they want one, they get it and BAM what the hell is wrong with this car!!??
And, someone willing to trade an 8 for an SUV was shopping on the wrong side of the lot anyway. I'd rather push my 8 than drive an SUV any day of the week!!

First off, I really dont know why i put the shifting thing in there. I guess sometimes i just get off work and shifting in traffic is a bitch esp. Thats prob where that came from.
As for the people who are baggin on me not researching and all that ****. from what i read the 8 was a 17/22 car. That is no where near my 12-14 crap. And then you throw in premium and your getting owned. I put in like 50 a week and dont get around town but maybe 3 times. Pretty shitty.
As for the frontier, who knows what i will get but when i bought the 8 it was in between that and a larger car. I was about 2 seconds away from gettin an 05 jeep grand cherokee. Pretty badass car too. Who knows, but until then **** gas prices.

way to complain about an rx8 on the rx8 forum, seems like you're only trying to draw attention to the thread and cuz nothing but negative comments. nobody's ever tried that one before. if you don't like the car we all can complete respect your choice and wish you well with your future purchase, but just go do exactly that and stop trying to cause a fire within the board.

I understand the frustration over the mpg and won't give you a lot of flack for it since I have been in the same boat since 10/03. But I will give you flack for the Jeep Grand Cherokee! I have worked with 2 people that own them and they are nothing but trouble! Especially around years 2-4! Engine, electrical, and transmission problems abound! You should consider a BMW X-5 instead... now that's a badass SUV!
There are some fun things you can do to upgrade the PCM for more torque and hp. Take a look around at some of the subforums on here for more info and success and failures.

Everyone knows EPA is usually on the high side. Your 18/24 RX-8 gets you more like 15/21. The RX-8 sucks for most people in terms of gas mileage. But if gas mileage is getting me down (and it is doing that somewhat), I'm not going to start looking in on getting a car rated 16/20 by the EPA. Hello? You just tried a 18/24 rated car. What makes you think a 16/20 rated car will make you happier?
Do yourself a favor and actually THINK this through. Most of the negative comments you're getting isn't because we think the RX-8 is the end all of all cars, but because your reasoning has been so stupid. Let's just flat out ignore the shifting thing.
So, if gas mileage is really bugging you get a car rated an EPA average of 30mpg. If you want your horsepower and gas mileage, like I said before, get yourself a frickin V6 Accord or V6 Camry.
Frontier: 265 HP, 284 lb/ft torque. 16 city, 20 freeway.
RX-8: 238 HP, 159 lb/ft torque. 18 city, 24 freeway.
V6 Accord: 244 HP, 211 lb/ft torque. 20 city, 29 freeway
V6 Camry: 268 HP, 248 lb/ft torque. 22 city, 31 freeway.
And look, they come in automatic. But since you're not looking at these two cars, it's obvious that you don't know what you want. You say one thing but you're thinking another.
It's like complaining that your Honda CRV is too big and bulky so you're thinking of trading it in for an H2.

I still love how people complain about the gas milage. I went from a 93' Chevy W/T1500 with a 27 gallon tank it had a V6 btw. Now I researched the gas milage and well it was pretty much the same i couldnt believe it, so when I drive my Rx-8 I dont notice the gas suckage that much. Just sucks that the tank is smaller so it only appears that my gas is going that much quicker. My only real regret was going into the dealership with a messed up back and no pain meds, I didnt walk out to lower the price.. but whateva.
