Notchy shift into 2nd with a weird "weeerrr" sound.

I've noticed that my RX8 has an uncomfortable shift into 2nd and a "weeeerrrr" sound every time I shift into it. It goes in just fine though other than the sound and the uncomfortable shift. No grinds or anything of that sort, just seems like it takes a little patience and effort to get into it. Any body else notice this issue?

Other gears seem to feel and sound perfect. 1st does "clunk" sometimes when I go from neutral into 1st, but I read that it is normal. 3rd does have the "weeerrr" sound by not as dramatic or frequent. I don't know if it is the way I am driving or what. I am still new to manual transmission and have A LOT to work on. I've probably only had around 1 - 1 1/2 hour of seat time in the RX8 and i am I learning manual on it. If it is the way I am shifting, please feel free to enlighten me to better improve my shifts.

I have experienced this issue too. Have no idea what it could be cuz the tranny is completely new. It is exactly as SayNoToPistons has described. All help is appreciated.

SayNo... have you noticed it is slightly less "sticky" to shift if the shifter is more to the "right side" of second as opposed to the left edge? May be in my head.

I haven't noticed that yet so I can't say. Like I said, I have VERY little seat time in the RX8. Do you also get the "weerrr" noise?

Get some RedLine into that tranny. Should clear her right up. Not really an issue, as any car will do that type of thing whenever you shift into a gear at too high RPMs *Say first at 20 MPH*

I've only had the sound when downshifting and I'm going to fast for that gear.

i just have to ask... are you talking about downshifting or when you are shifting up into second... as in 1st to second.. because that weerr sound you hear if you are downshifting is completely normal... just the sound of the beautiful rotary engine working with the tranny

I believe that's the sound of the syncro speeding up the transmission's gears so they align with the speed of the rear wheels. The two have to be in sync before the transmission can go into gear. Trying to force it may produce a grinding sound.

When down shifting, try this:

Shift from 3rd to neutral
Blip the throttle a bit to raise the RPMs
Shift from neutral to 2nd

completely normal.... i love the sound, do watch how fast your going when you shift into second... you can thrash your syncros if you downshift while your going excessive speeds

is the "weer" sound coming from the engine or the clutch? I hear a wirring/slight grinding noise from right below the shifter when I shift into 3rd. It does this even if I'm coasting with the clutch pedal in and shifting from neutral to third so obviously not an engine sound.

The sound you are hearing is completly normal. I have the same sound but the Axial Flow SS I have resonates the sounds of the transmission so I hear that most of the time.

The gear differences between 1st and 2nd are pretty big so it's by far the toughest shift to make when running in high RPM ranges. 1st clunks from time to time as well.

I went into second once at 85mph on the 5 south, now that's a sound you don't want to hear!

I haven't done much downshifting. Probably once or twice but I double clutched. I am talking about upshifting.

The "weeeerrr" sound while upshifting from 1-2nd is normal? It sounds like it doesn't want to go in and it is almost as if the tranny is saying "Ahhh, no man! No!!!".

I plain on doing so. I certainly hope it smooths things up a bit.

I don't experience it while downshifting, I don't do much of it. Its while upshifting and it almost feels like something is not aligned right.

Yeah, that's exactly how it feels with my car and it only does it when shifting from 2nd to 3rd. But from what people are saying I guess it's normal.

Isnt the OP's car one of the supposed R2's? If that is the case, then its either completely normal, or your trans is way out of whack... Its hard to tell, since no one else has one.

Yes, I have the super fast R2 and the stupid 1-2nd upshift is keeping me from going super fast.

Maybe since you have so little time behind the wheel you havent changed the synchro break in fluid?

If it makes the weeeerrr sound all the time your bearings are out. The dealer replaced the bearings in mine and the sound went away.

Changing the transmission fluid might mask the noise.

I'm assuming you're not rev matching when downshifting? If not, then like what was said, completely normal.
