nvr drive in the snow!
ok i just got out of classed and randomly a huge storm just r came out of no where and now my car is abandoned at a gas station parking lot because it is absolutely impossible to drive...wow this has been the worst night of my life

Check out the winter tire threads in the Tires and Wheels forum (also the Canada Region forum) - we've been warning for over 5 months now that the stock high-performance summer tires will be useless and dangerous in snow or ice. With proper winter tires, the RX-8 does very well in winter conditions.
Lots of other people have already found out what you did, and many of us have also posted of our positive experiences when we use winter tires.
Regards,
Gordon

Calm down man.. if your car was destroyed by a snow plow and you died in the process, then it might be the worst night of your life. You learned more than just school work tonight, now you know how bad stock tires handle in the snow.
I know for a fact you are not the first person to have their 8 stranded due to a stock setup in the snow. Sorry for your misfortune, $hit happens.
Where do you live? I'm guessing this is the first snow of the season for you? (if so.. lucky you! )
(PS: with snow tires the 8 is one of the finest handling cars I've ever driven.. at least with DSC turned on)

Chill. Those two are some of the most opinionated posters on this forum. If you write it, they will post a comment about it if they so feel like it, be it good or bad. There's always someone like that everywhere.
However, some of the things they have posted is very accurate and occasionally knowledgeable but they have lost patience with those who don't live on here and read everything, that is what their "problem" is, not yours. (No offense to any one here)
So, you have your 8 sitting at a gas station. It's better there than in a ditch or wrapped around a pole somewhere. Yes, you found out as others of us who got their cars BEFORE reading the many posts on here and joining about driving with the summer tires in the winter snow. I found out the hard way too, except I white knuckled it home. My 8 has sat in the driveway for more days this past two weeks than I have taken it out.
I still have the stock tires too because I cannot afford to plunk $900 down for snow tires at the moment. I can afford the payments on my car, my wife's car and everything else, I just don't want to go out and get another small short term loan and have decided to just not drive it on days when snow or ice is expected.
Against those two opinionated posters above's advice, I did get my tires siped for situations where I absolutely have to drive a short distance very carefully home in unexpected white stuff. It DID help considerably with traction, and I am not afraid it hurt the tires or will make them wear out sooner or not perform in extreme situations because I am not planning on going 100 MPH + nor taking turns at 80.
Never the less I am planning on replacing the stock tires with something a bit better for my area's weather with ultra high performance all-season radials after I save up the money to do so and after these stock tires show a lot of wear in about 12 - 15K, that's sometime next fall by my estimate.
So, consider yourself lucky that you didn't attempt to drive further, your 8 is in one piece as you are too and you both will live to drive another day. And, by the way, sorry to hear about your problems and I hope it gets better soon.

i had some one pick me up...my school is in an area where theres not much around, my closest option was to drive to the nearest gas station...and yea it wasnt fun getting there i got stuck about 15 times along the way...im not freaking out about this situation, im just upset that i just got home from a frustration situation and theres people who feel that they can make sarcastic comments because they have more posts than you...thankyou for the info on the tires by the, yes did know that already..i do read this forum...but thank you..i just thought that i had an experience to share with the forum...i guess you have to double think what you post here because you'll get your head bit off if you dont...but once again thankyou for all the POSITIVE feed back that i've gotten...

Like I said, I whiteknuckled it home in a similar situation last week. We were supposed to get snow showers, not the two inches we had by the time I got off work, and I even left 20 minutes early. Because I have spent many years driving many vehicles in the snow and have a good idea as to what I can and can't do doing such just by the way it handles and feels, I was able to get home by being very careful and annoying the hell out of other drivers while doing so. I've been one of those other drivers. This was the worst case of slipping and sliding I have ever been in and I had to drive 10 - 15 mph just to get it across town. I did get it up to 25 at one point. I prayed no idiot would pull out and act like a fool in front of me. That is why I got my tires siped, just for the surprise that you experienced tonight so I can at least get home in a similar situation. 25-35% better traction is better than almost none.
Sit back, relax, have a warm one or a cold one and make plans to pick it up after the streets clear up a bit sometime tomorrow, hopefully. I do hear you and understand where you are coming from. Thanks for sharing.

Hey,
Don't be afraid to post here again. Some people are just rude, and are more interested in reading their own posts than listening to what others have to say. Don't let that ruin your experience on the forum. I'm glad that you are in one piece, and I'm sure that you felt alot better once you got the car safely parked. I've had some experiences similar to that driving, and that adrenalin rush can be a little hard to shake so feel better tomorrow and remember that not everyone on the forum is a jerk.

Its unfortunate your were caught in the snow. I have spent too many hours in academic mode, getting caught in the snow late, and it being a battle to get home safely. That was in Sault Ste Marie, at the Canadian border, and not in an RX-8. An RX-8 sounds like a really nice car to drive as a student. Based on the information in this forum, I bought mine with snows, and have driven it when the local schools were closed.

My god, theres more drama in here than on channel 7..
Anyways, my honest input.. Im assuming the 8 is your first sports car? rw drive? Most RW drive cars suck in the snow, im talking about BMW's, Mercedes, etc..
Unless you have sand in your trunk to give you some weight, fresh snow is possibly the worse road condition ever.
As someone stated here, find yourself a decent set of winter tires pref with new wheels, this way you can interchange easily
Good luck man, and take it easy.. Lifes too short to worry about **** that didnt happen =)

If it's any consolation, a whole bunch of us UK RX-8 owners got caught out in similar circumstances last week:
http://www.rx8ownersclub.co.uk/forum...pic.php?t=1307
We had a few inches of snow (our first this Winter) late in the day, just in time for the evening rush hour, and the journey home was not at all fun.
In the UK we don't generally use snow or all season tires. Where I am, near London, we got one day's snow last year and none on the two previous years. It would be crazy to spend four months of the year on poor handling tires just on the offchance that it might snow. With the average front wheel drive car you can usually get by. The RX-8 is a different matter altogether. Wide tires + rear wheel drive + 200+hp = DONT DRIVE IN SNOW. I'll be watching the weather forecast more carefully from now on.

titaniumgrey,
I'm sorry, but that's just too funny that you ran out of gas right next to your house. At least in the coming years you can look back on the situation and laugh at yourself, at least I would.

Man, sorry to hear about getting caught in the snow. I learned quickly that the stock tires are horrible. I have Dunlop M2's and they are awesome in the snow!!! Good luck to you!!!

hahahahahaha lol
I feel for you man. I currently drive a Miata with performance tires on it. I was working out at the dojo one night and it had started to lightly snow. Like a dumbass, I decided to go have a beer with the fellas.
When I returned to my car I found 3 or four inches of snow on the ground, and it was snowing heavily. The 20 minute drive I normally had to my house, turned into an one hour white knuckle nightmare. Every turn had me countersteering to control a slide, and ever stop I held my breathe as I slowly let out the clutch hoping I'd be able to get moving without sliding sideways into the car next to me.
