Check the owners manual. It has different schedules for different driving conditions. According to the manual, I would imagine most people should do it every 5000.

I do it when the oil gets near low on the dip stick and it's convenient for me. It's usually about 2.5-3K(and filter too). I have over 519k on seven rotary cars and it has worked for me. The exception would be if you raced it and needed to add oil sooner.

The 8 is suppose to burn Oil every 1000 miles as it lubricates the tips just like the dropping on chains on motorcycles.

I new it was every 3000-5000 but i meant to say on a brand new vehicle. I have yet to put 1000 miles on my 06' 8 and was wondering if you needed to service it sooner for the first oil change?

Probably wouldn't hurt to change it sooner on the break-in period. I did. It's not imperative though.

Here's some break-in tips for the first thousand miles or so.

I'm in a simialr boat as you. I've got almost 900 on mine right now and I plan to do my first oil change @1000. That way it'll kinda represent the means to get any of those "new-car" wear-in's out, and since that also marks the end of the first stage of engine break-in...it'll also be time to up the limit from 4K to 6K. I plan to drive mine another 2K then and change it @3000 total, then all engine break-in is complete, and you can get on a steady pattern of every 3K. At least that's the way i'm gonna attack it, and it seems like a pretty good idea on a brand new engine!

YES, DO IT NOW!

I do mine at 500 or 800 miles, but that was piston engines with alot of moving parts.

I still did it for the rotary.

wait you change the oil every 500-800 miles?

i thought we were supposed to ADD oil every 1000 miles or so since this thing eats oil. but you're just completely changing it? huh?

Wow...i'll bet you spend almost as much on oil as on gas...

look like the oil wigs are gettin ya from BOTH sides!

Unless you only drive yur car like, 200 miles a month, that seems just a hair excessive to me...

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the car comes from the factory with some kind of additive to help the break in process so they want you to run that in there for a while and not change the oil too soon. I waited till 1750 to do mine and it came out FILTHY, the car seemed to idle much smoother at startup and crank a little easier. I'll probably start doing the oil every 3000-4000 miles from now on and then do the diff and tranny fluid every 3rd oil change.

Make sure the car has enough oil in it--just carry a bottle with you all the time. Otherwise I'm on the every 5000 schedule. That makes it easy for me to know when to get it changed just by looking at the odometer. I autocross, but a few minutes a week at high RPM isn't that big of a deal to this motor, as long as it has enough oil.

Not sure if it is the same with Mazda, but the guy at the Acura dealer said Acura (and i think honda) actually runs their new engines for awhile at the factory and drains the oil out of them, then puts new oil in. Not sure how acurate this is, but the guy "seemed" like he knew what he was talking about. And that dealer treated us very well, so I guess I was inclined to believe him.

Be aware that even though this car has a 7 quart capacity, you will only be changing around 4 quarts of it. The rest stays in the oil coolers and lines so you don't really change all of your oil. I change my oil and filter every 3000 miles.

My mechanic buddy told me the same thing. He reccomended I stick to the reccomended break in, becuase the extra detergents are in the oil to help get rid of a lot of the weird oils etc that may be in the engine from manufacture. I would imagine we aren't going to have chunks of metal sloughing off, but who knows. I may split the difference and get it done around 2500.

DON'T LET THE OIL GET TO LOW LEVELS!!!!!!!
THAT IS ONE OF THE MAIN CAUSES FOR PREMATURE ENGINE FAILURE IN ROTARIES

as we are on the subject of oils.. for those that take their car into the dealers to get their oil changed, do you guys just use the mazda factory oil, or ask for a third party like castrol to be put in... wondering if one is better than the other.

Has anyone had any adverse reaction by making the Dealership use synthetic oil you brought in? Do you think my dealership will give me a hassle if I tell em to use the Mobil 1 stuff I bring in?

Ive only had my 8 for about a month/1500miles and I check my oil every 400-500 miles and it usually needs about a quart of oil every 500 miles or so. I plan on having the oil changed after about 4000 miles of having it and every 4000 miles after.
