oil consumption

oil consumption
My friend recently purchased a 2010 RX8. Her oil warning came on and took it to the dealer and was three quarts low. They told her that she needed to check and add oil on a regular schedule. Is this normal?

You can search on this forum and find an answer to almost any question you could have. But to answer your question...Yes. Tell your friend buy a gallon of 5w20 or 5w30 and a funnel. Check the oil at least every 500 miles and keep it close to the full line. Go

Your friend is a moron.
Have her read the fu&*ing manual!
On a new car, this is usually in a nice pretty zippered black case in the glovebox, which is located right in front of where the front passenger would sit. It's just above knee level, and there is a little latch that will allow access to this glovebox.
I predict this will end badly.

Your friend can get an electronic copy of the manual from maszdausa.com. That's a lot easier for reference than the printed one. (Manual for my '06 is too big to fit in the glove box.) She should sign up in the owner's section. That should also put her in line to get good discount coupons from her dealer.
While c-phlat recommends buying a gallon of oil, handling that under the hood can be awkward. I suggest getting a quart bottle as well. After using the quart, keep it as a measuring cup. Fill it half-way. Then, when the dipstick shows half a quart down, just dump that half quart in.

Toyota are excrement nowdays. They hassle people over frame rust etc etc. Ford if want to drive without opening the hood. Letting Celica die off with no effort to replace. They deserve

This is straight up hilarious! My eyes are watering at these posts...
Anyways, in all seriousness and in defense of the female purchaser, unless you're familiar with the rotary engine, you very well may not know to add oil. Her friend did the right thing by varifying they weren't being hosed by the stealership.
ADD OIL AND CHECK THE LEVEL EVERY 500-1000 MILES, DEPENDING ON HOW QUICKLY YOU BURN OIL. I lose about a quart every 1000 miles or so...
This community can be a little abrasive for those how don't know how sarcastic this crowd is, and even a little too much still for those who know.
I've done my part to help out a new owner. That is all...let the hazing continue.

Was the dealer supposed to tell her about the redline beep?
The fact that it might require gas?
That the lights must be on to have the glovebox light come on?
Air in the tires?
Spark plug change?
How to adjust the seats?
How to open the trunk and gas lid?
How one might try de-flooding and how to avoid flooding?
Shall I go on?

My responses were in no way based on the fact that she was/is a woman. They are perfectly capable as a guy is when it comes to this. I get annoyed because people don't even take the time to learn anything anymore. We've become a throw away society and a society that seems to need everything "now"! (That last part has nothing to do with the topic at hand).

C'mon.................every car will use oil and every car needs it changed. Yes, this one is a little more frequent........but...............even if you don't memorize the manual, it's a good thing to sit down(especially on a new car) and at least open the damn thing.

You c'mon. This 2010 car loses oil, most 2010 cars don't, normal people don't expect it to be an issue, and if it is, it's a one in a million defect. It's in the dealer's interest to inform people of this. Flooding (if it's still an issue) should be mentioned as well... how to open the trunk? No, every car does it the same way. Obviously her sales guy was a douche and worried that she might not buy a car with those caveats, so decided not to tell her.
Regular people aren't rotary experts, they just want to enjoy the car. If nobody draws their attention to the maintenance items, they won't know... giving us a lot of low-mileage shells without engine to work with.

Most cars have pistons :P Anyone who doesn't research something that costs thousands of dollars might want to take a little extra time to do so in the future. It sounds like I read more about my $300 tv than she did on her 2010 Rx8 before purchase.
