oil consumption question...
ok now i know that the oil consumption with a rotary is a normal thing.. but from what i have read online people say they add a quart or 2 every 3000 miles.. now i just got my oil changed wednesday.. on sunday the oil light came on.. so i checked it and there was NO oil in there.. now thats a bit ridiculous. I'm sure thats not normal. Anyone have any idea what the problem could be?? theres not leaks that i could see or anything like that.

Or maybe it leaked out? Who changed the oil, the dealer? The manual tells them to change the washer on the drain plug. I had a Jiffy Lube (years ago) changed my oil and lost the washer and simply tightened the drain plug. I think my oil was gone within a week.

I don't think you would have driven very far at all with no oil in it, for sure not wednesday to sunday. You would have known right away. There could have been a couple of factors: Whoever changed your oil didn't put enough in, or the oil filter wasn't sealed properly, or the drainage bolt wasn't sealed properly. I would check the simple things first and deffinatly call whoever changed it because they did something wrong in any case. I think my dealer put too much oil in mine, When I have checked it the last couple of times i'm still near full. And the opposite is true with these cars. If it's not using oil, then there's something wrong.

You added oil to bring it back to full, right? That should answer most of your questions.
First of all, if it was 2 quarts or less then it was just low and you don't have much to worry about in terms of engine having ran without oil. If you had to add 4 quarts or so, then it was possibly not refilled after the change. As far as leaks, for the next several days inspect the ground under the car and inspect the oil level every day. If the level holds you're fine. If there are any leaks of consequence you'll see and/or smell them soon enough. If the level drops rapidly and there aren't any leaks then there is something very weird going on. Note that on the track the oil consumption is very much higher than normal. For normal driving, Mazda's guideline, iirc, is that 1 quart per 600 miles is acceptable. Typical consumption is less, as you noted. Personally I get about 1200 to 1500 miles per quart.
