oil dilema
just purchased 2005 rx8 w/6700 miles and noticed that the oil level was approx. 1 quart overfilled. i immediatly had the car serviced and noticed that 5w30 oil was used instead of the recommended 5w20, i live in a warmer climate (florida), and wondered if this is why the "thicker" oil was used. should i insist on 5w20 to be used in the furture or is the 5w30 a better bet for my climate. also do you think any serious damage could have been done by having it over-filled with oil. iwas told at the time that the car just had an oil change, and i put aprrox. 250 miles on it before i noticed it had been overfilled. PLEASE HELP

How high up on the stick was the oil?
Dealers typically seem to fill to the top of the flat and this causes no problems.
5W30 should not cause problems but is not the recommended oil. Did a Mazda dealer do this?
BTW, welcome to the club and congrats on the car.

Just drain some of it out If you do it cold you won't burn your fingers. Just don't drop the drain bolt...you will loose a lot more than the quart you need to remove.
Or you can wait and it might blow all the extra into your intake

welcome to the club, great people are in here with helpful info... I actually heard that it is really bad for there to be more oil than the full mark on the dipstick, because there's all that oil and it has no where to go, but then again the 8 does drink a S*it load of oil, so if you drive at High RPM's and long distances i'm sure the oil will balance out, but worse comes to worse, you can always drain some yourself, thats if you know how..... good luck, welcome to the club

Oz spec RX8s are specified with 10W30.
I live down south which is cool most part of the year and have not had an issue with the 10W30 oil.
Summer here down south can reach over 40 degrees C (dunno what the farenheit conversion is) and never had issues with the car overheating or cutting power at high revs after prolonged driving. You should be ok in Florida using 10W30.

Actually thats pretty interesting. I also live in Florida and for my birthday a familly friend got me oil for my RX8. They asked the service department of walmart and the guy didn't know so he looked it up and evidently what he found recomended 5w30. I know its walmart (which is why I had it exchanged). Iknow right now the car is running 5w20 because thats what the shop put in it when i had the oil changed after I bought the car.
