just get in there and twist that SOB off, make sure you have some kind "protection" on the floor, cus the filter is right side up and the oil left in it will drip down...

"Righty tighty, lefty loosey."

They should only be tightened a half turn post seating but many shops/dealers overdo it.

Wrap a rag at the base of the filter for as dozer says the filter on the 04-08 models is 'right end up' (which is actually wrong end up).

Be sure to use a new 'crush ring' (washer) with the filter. Many vendors include them, including Rosenthal Mazda, where I get my OEM's (in part thanks for maintaining the TSB library).

Trussville Mazda is also very good to deal with: http://www.buymazdaparts.com/

Or you can just get Mobil1 filters.

Well do you have a recent rebuilt motor?
If yes then it may be vaselin, we use butt loads of vaseline to keep gaskets from falling out on assembly and it ends up all over the dip stick for a while. We are starting to cut back on the amount we use but early on(as in our test car) we used more vaseline then now and it shows up. Is your coolant orange anyways?

Sometimes you need a oil filter wrench that fits on top of the filter. There isn't any room for the type that twists from the sides. I have one with three fingers that clamps down as you turn. There is also one that is like a cap that slips on top of the filter.
