I concede to the almighty sumo oil filter torquer of Hiroshima. I have an appt tomorrow at the stealership. I like taking my cars in there about as much as I like rootcanals.

wow...this thread is seriously frustrating. why not just go out and get the filter tool i recommended? takes 5 seconds to take the filter off. what's up with all this macguyver-ing?? the time it took you to try all these half-assed techniques, you could've already been done.

lol

fwiw, http://www.finishlineperformance.com...ine_index.html carries the wrench filter and washers pretty cheap. IIRC they have a 10pack as a discount if you ask for it.

Good point. A Screwdriver will help get a bra off the first time just like an oil filter.

Is this what you're referring to??

If so I have one and tried it. It has three different sizes you can use. On the smallest notch I was able to get a decent grip but it still wouldn't move. Maybe I should have tried the sandpaper inside the claw.

Are you kidding?

there's no room to use that Monster.

Can't you get anyone from the forum that lives in your area to help ja, out?

Otherwise stop complaing and get the dealer to do it.

I would not use a screw driver. It can become a real bitch, and what happens when ja can't get it off.

Ah. I siipose ja could always look at those boobies Dominion posts.

Just to bring some closure to this thread. Got a free oil change at the dealer because there was a delay and they left the freakin' filter on...

Sorry couldn't help myself. But yes, there was a delay so they gave me the change (including filter) for free. You can actually see the filter gasket now whereas the other was tightened down so much the filter was practically flush.

Dano & Low Fly, I actually had that wrench device in hand at autozone and put it back....oh well, next time if there is one.

Swoope, you mean you leave that thing in your engine bay until your next change??

i leave it stuck to the top of the filter... keeps me from having to guide it back down the next time... and i cant lose it.

Exactly! I don't know why everyone is using claws, sandpaper, screwdrivers, TNT, Road Kill, etc to loosen those things. Just put an end cap wrench on the oil filter and it'll come off no problem.

For wrenches, I like to use a Swivel Head Ratchet for the swivel action.

The metal cap wrench works *most* of the time, but this aspect of filters is poor design, imo -- too many sides. As you can see, a 16-sided cap wrench is pretty close to round. And there is some flex because the metal of the filter is thin and the cap wrench isn't much thicker. So, if the filter is really tight, there can be slippage.

But that's easily solved. Take some sheet-metal screws. With the cap off, drill holes through 2 or 3 facets of the cap, the size of the threads on the screws. Put the cap on the filter, then drive the screws through the holes and through the filter to get a grip on the metal casing.

Of course, now you have holes in the filter. That's a good thing. You'll get the filter off, because you HAVE to get it off . But really, the screw thing should be all you need for a stubborn filter.

As a last-last resort you can drive the filter around with a hammer and chisel held tangent to the case.

I agree about the limitations of cap type filter wrenches. I use them, they're great in tight spots, but for me they always slip just enough that they jam onto the filter.

There are strap type filters that you use with a socket handle and extension bar, so you can get into tight places.

Okay, I'll put myself in the lucky category that I've never had a problem with an *good* end cap wrench. However, I do have a very think high quality one. The metal is over twice as thick as those flimsy Kragen ones. I had completely forgot how much the cheap ones suck.

I've had the high quality little Vector end cap wrench for over 15 years and never had a problem with it. I've probably used it over 50 times. The big end cap wrench is a total and complete POS . It actually weighs less than the small one! Just look at the crappy stamping where the socket attaches. I had completely forgotten about the nightmare I went through it with my truck. Ended up crunching the filter with a band wrench, used a chisel etc. Gawd that sucked!

Yes I completely agree with everyone that has posted that Quality Tools Are A Must! You use crap, and you'll get crap results with bloody knuckles.

Thank you for reminding me, I've got to toss that thing and get a good end cap wrench for the truck oil filter.
