That same book also tells you to use 5w20......

So how bad is it if the oil gets overfilled? I'm pretty sure the dealership overfilled on my oil change last week. I can't confirm this though because the car immediately went into storage and I'm in a different state.

It's fine sitting there for now. Drain some when you can yourself or take it back to who overfilled it and ask them for exact fill to near top line. Inspect intake for excess oil. There are some threads with pics.

Yes, but there's no reason to not follow this advice. I can't vouch for how much difference there's going to be when cold (although it should be fairly easy to test), but I also see no reason not to comply with the manual in this. My rule of thumb for my cars is always to follow the manufacturer recommendations unless I have a very good, and well researched, reason to do otherwise.

Yes it does, but we all know the reason for that - to help Mazda meet their lineup MPG averages.

Warm up and then wait five minutes or so after shutdown prior to checking oil level has been the manufacturer's recommended procedure for every car I've ever owned/used in over 40 years now. So ...

5-20 is a joke look at all the blown engines. Sorry but Mazda has been known to be wrong sometimes they are not perfect, always question things and authority. 5-20 is salad dressing imo. I do live in very hot Ctrl Texas climate so it falls under extreme conditions. Mazda racing uses Idemitsu 10-30 synthetic not 5-20 salad dressing btw.

^ I thought we were discussing oil level check procedure. Aren't there enough "what oil should I use" threads already? Again, we all know why Mazda "recommends" 5w20 dino.
