Race Roots has a high capacity/awesome one they make. Don't recall the price though.

Any idea of this silicone would suffice for an rx8 oil pan?

being a frugal individual myself, I have found it interestingly enough that the OEM silicone tends to work the best.

I know 14 bucks sounds like a lot but do yourself the favor and get the Silicone from Mazda to ensure it's not been sitting on a shelf for years.

I bet they go through Silicone like it's going outta style and it's fresh like the prince of bel air.

That's the one, I was looking at it the other day and couldn't find the page again today. Holds 6 quarts of oil! The greddy sits low which is my fear as the oil pan has already gotten dented

Did it today with the ultra grey

Hopefully killed two birds with one stone, and got rid of the oil light and got rid of the leak.

The Mazda silicone was $20+ and had to be ordered, would have been in on Thursday. I'm pretty confident this ultra grey will hold as I have used it on oil pans before, just on different vehicles.

Will update the thread as to progress and whether or not the problem is resolved.

Thanks to all who gave their 2 cents.

I'm surprised you didn't use this like I suggested:

https://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php...32&postcount=9

Blows away anything else I've seen
I'm sure the ultra grey will work fine however
Hope you got it fixed!

It wasn't in stock in any of the parts stores I went to, or else I would have used it

Just a follow-up for those that care/followed this thread.

All my problems are gone, no more oil pan leaks and the engine oil light has stayed off since I replaced the pan.

Seems like the ultra gray rtv worked fine, who knows about the long term but I have my hopes that it'll be fine.

Thank you for this thread! I am currently suffering from an oil pan leak, and I didn't even know Mazda didn't use rubber oil pan gaskets lol... got me some Ultra Grey yesterday. It should do the trick. Thanks for posting your results.

Mazda has not used oil pan (sump pan) gaskets for over 20 years.

Just be careful with the Ultra - put it on the pan, not the block.

It's quite possible to crack the aluminum housing by getting silicone in the bolt hole then torquing it.

Glad i found this old thread after a bit of digging.
So i have a fresh rebuild with only 1000km break in on the engine. It was done by a reputable builder.
From day 1 it had exact issues pictured above by OP.
I have checked from above and under the car after each drive. The engine oil was and still is on the full dipstick mark. It is a decent leak of a drip per hour roughly. Yes i nipped up the 3 main culprit sump bolts chasing the easy and quick fix. No bone! Yes this a teething issue and definitely a warranty job so no issues there.

Originally i thinking and hoping it would just be a sump reseal job, however i am now convinced there is more to it.

After multiple rag wipes of the oil and the car left on stands overnight, the drips continue so it is not temp or pressure related. Here is the kicker, I traced the leak up above sump behind the header. I cannot see any further up than here and no hoist. I have done all i can to chase this.

Where could this be coming from and what is the solution? Yes it is going back to the shop but i want to know info from those that know their stuff.
Just a stab in the dark but could it be gearbox oil? How would it escape? I replaced this oil about 2000km ago prior to rebuild. No leaks prior.

As always I welcome your thoughts and knowledge.

Gearbox oil has a particular smell, kinda like pine. Not at all like engine oil. So that should be easy to confirm/eliminate. It can leak if the transmission plugs and washers were not reinstalled properly or if a washer has been reused too many times.

Up above the sump/header are the oil injectors. Since oil doesnt leak up, thats the only thing that comes to mind. Maybe remove the upper intake manifold and have a good look around underneath it?

Thanks for the info Loki. I will definitely do the sniff test to varify engine or gearbox oil. I know i put in Redline synthetic into gearbox last year, but dont recall any kind of pine smell. More of a burnt smell on the old gearbox oil but nowhere near as bad as the diff oil smell.
I am not inclined to the pull the UIM though as it is warranty work on a barely run in engine. It is smooth as silk so far, with just the annoying oil leak to get sorted. I hope!!!!

I have varified this leak as gearbox oil leak through the sniff test (thanks Loki) also it still looks near new. Unlike the engine oil that has a little colour to it now with 1000km on it.
Can only assume a leak from the input shaft that was never there prior to engine rebuild? Or other seal? As i have no real idea (and currently away from home) i just placed a clean bowl in situ and at least i will know how much Redline90MT i have lost.
I will just send it back to workshop and say "please fix it sir" and hello warranty!
Although it appears i have moved away from original thread title after trublesooting, I'll post up final outcome once resolved. I was just hoping for a very basic first service on this engine, but oh well, things happen! 😐

Well just an update to say that my oil leak on engine rebuild is finally sorted. Although it did take numerous visits to the shop.
It was not a sump gasket leak, nor a gearbox leak, instead a cracked oil feed line to OMP that just sent a dribble down to sump on side of drain plug (just like pics in above post). I did not bother getting too annoyed although it was frustrating to have this leak on a rebuild. I assume this line was cracked during install, no idea really.
Anyway, all sorted now so consider this as an option to chase down if you have similar symptoms. Onwards and upwards from here. 😀

If it's just a small amount then I wouldn't worry too much, you're going to be keeping a ,much closer eye not he oil anyway.

I realize the OP is all set but figured I'd mention -
Pineapple racing sells a great rubber viton oil pan gasket, no silicone needed, lasted 4 years without leaks on my s1. A bit pricey @ $50 shipped, but well worth not having to painfully scrub/clean pan/block from silicone. Wish they made one for FC/FD blocks.
Viton material sheets are also sold online, and would be easy to trace the oil pan onto to make your own for a bit less.
