![Question](https://www.rx8club.com/images/icons/icon5.gif)
I don't think this has been covered.
I got a new engine due to the side seal on the 2nd (rear most) rotor failing. My 2004 8 was purchased with 65k miles on it, so likely hood is who knows what the previous owner did for maintanance.
I ran 5w30 Royal Purple at the time of pickup, and the engine failure just recently occurred, or signs of failure I guess started Mid December 72k. (long starts on cold, bellowing white smoke for 30 seconds, CEL light due to 2nd rotor mis-fire). After changing he plugs, and getting a new battery, I dropped it off since the above symptoms never cleared up, it was just able to startup without issue, also i noticed water coolant consumption increased drastically needing to be topped off within 2 weeks of the coolant light coming on.
So to the theory:
The omp manages 2 injectors that are designed to lube the side seals on the rotors right? (Crap cant' find the white paper by Mazda in one of the threads that linked to it.)
So would going to a heavier oil (5w3 0) cause issues, especially in the upper rpm band since the heavier oil would have a thicker viscosity as temp increases in ratio to rpm increase. I know the OMP is suppose to increase flow in a matched ratio to rpm's.
I'm trying to reason why the sideseal would fail, this seems to be a pretty common occurance, but since Mazda N.A. requires engines to be sent back for diagnosis, there isn't a solid database publicly available to track the failures.... unless you happen to be working at the rebuild facility on the East Coast.
I'm sure other failures like apex seals, or the o-ring on rotor itself failing, hell since these rotors are pressure cast i'm sure some have probably cracked under the high rpm tolerance. It just sucks, and also in MNAO smart move to keep failures under lock and key.
Thoughts?
yes i've read the sticky wickies.
though not on the rx-7 board

where did your car come from???
pm i think i have the white papers you want.. the last flash is good.. some04s had bad omps. mine was one..

Lincoln Mercury in the Seattle Area. (It's Yellow).
flash eh? Interesting, the new motor was still getting mis-fires on the 2nd rotor, Service manager said they had to do a flash, i need to followup on that.
Dominion - The Mazda Dealer should be able to check your vin for the PCM flash. I'm not sure if you can do an online search by your vin to see if it has been done or not, the dealers are suppose to put the campaign sticker under the hood, or on the inside doorpanal for any work that has been done in relation.

had a tard, fighting with a troll on another tread moment...
make sure you are on the t flash... if you are still getting misfires on the motor. coils first.. but with that mileage. fuel pump..
i have a bit of scantool by hymee info to back it up.. and just went through it..

my misfires are gone after they did a flash. I'm going to call them on the way home if I can' get there before 6pm PST.
I plan on gettng the coils & wires done in the next month. Plus plan on doing the fuel pump by end of year 'allowing'. It runs to redline great, i've went ahead and opened it up since i've put 400 miles on it in the last week keeping it under 6k rpm.
It pulls alot stronger, though i've noticed oil consumption is higher then before.... it's been a 1/2 quart low between my Last gas-up, but that's better then the OMP not working.
Thanks for the info swoope!
