OK, I have an AT, now what can I do

I really didn't do any research before I got my car. I kinda just bought my RX-8 on a whim, and got the one they had on the lot. I was sold from the start. To me, the car is beautiful, and has a great feel to it.

So, I didn't do ANY homework, and ended up getting the Touring model with the auto transmission. Keep in mind, I'm totally happy with that decision. However, from what I'm reading, apparantly my version is only 212hp. The 232hp only comes in the manual transmission?

If that's true, is there anything I can do to boost the hp, asside from adding an expensive turbo or supercharger?

I'm just looking for pointers on where to look. Please, no flames or "use the search" replies from the forum lifers. I have searched and read but wanted to make a post to get some fresh opinions.

John

Air Intake, Pullies, and Exhaust will be your only options in the realm of HP gains but they are marginal at best. Unlike other cars where doing these mods you see gains of +10Hp per mod the 8 gets like 2-3 at best (if that by some peoples comments). Most of the mods are purely for show and for exhaust note change. The only real Mod you can do that is a alternative to a Turbo or S/C is getting a Nitrous kit installed.

Btw I'm a A/T owner as well welcome to the club.

Not much, any mods you do will be minimal (intake, exhaust)

Ok, that's what I thought. Just figured I'd ask.

I figured that after I got toasted by a Neon SRT-4 (which, from what I understand is a freaking fast car), that my RX-8 is more of a looker than a racer. Then again, I don't need any speeding tickets, or get in any accidents, so I'm happy with that. As long as I can zoom past that darn soccor mom in her volvo, I'm happy. And I can still easily do that with my AT model.

Thanks guys.

if u add all the parts like intake/exhaust/pulley/midpipe/etc together , throw another 2-3 K in it you'll get yourself a Greddy Turbo install and tuned.

John, our 6sp auto's only rev to aprox 7k rpm. The manuals rev to 9k. That 2k extra rpm is the extra hp. The torque from 2k to 7k should compare aprox to the manual except no grinding 2nd gear.

It's not much of a car for the boring kind of racing (drag), it's a stellar car if you want to have some fun with your racing (autox/road course).

The RX-8 is more of a track car than a drag car. Straight line is something, but not everything. And the SRT-4 is among the fastest in the price range, but it's not that great in anything else.

But if you do want a horsepower gain, real fun, and a car with soul, trade for the MT.

theres a couple of places in america you can get some really nice curving roads... If you're really luck you'll look out of the city and try to find the back country roads that make driving Oh so very delicious... Its like drinking an energy drink in the wee hours to wake up.
