Is this an issue?
1) Is it possible that this car is really an '04, despite what the VIN says?
2) Did this car sit around for an entire year on the dealer lot?
3) Is it possible this was one of the first '05's produced?
Should I be concerned about this?

no, a lot of car manufacturers do that. thats why new year models come out as early as july of the previous year.
meaning: build date of july '04, but it is an '05 model

I just read through some of the threads dealing with a car sitting around for a year though. If I had known about some of those issues, I would've asked for some new fluids, etc., maybe.
The odomoter had 48 miles on it when I left the dealer lot, so there's no way it could've been a demo.

so congratulations(?) on getting the very first batch of the '05s, which doesn't have the ability to hook up with the factory Sirius satellite radio kit :o

Is that the only issue?
Tell me that the July '04 produced RX-8s are the most perfectly crafted, and problem-free batch ever produced. :D

but since I have a June '04 built 2004, which is almost practically identical to your '05, I can confidently tell you that you have "the most perfectly crafted, and problem-free batch ever produced." :D

Doubt it, but mine has been pretty damn good to me.

I bought my '05, manufactured in 7/04, in February, and have had no problems at all beyond the inconvenience of recalls. Can't speak to the sitting-for-a-year issue, although that's not so unusual for a lot of cars. My parents bought a 2003 Olds Intrigue a year after it was manufactured and it's been perfect . . . Wouldn't hurt to ask about the fluids, though, and if you're in the snow belt you might want to watch the battery, which was just adequate, as it gets colder.

Mine is also an '05 with build date of 7/04. Other than the brake squeal,(which will be fixed next week) I have had no issues with the car.

it not on the door
it is on the door frame and simply has:
