OMG i cant believe i did that
heres the scoops, i was getting ready to leave my friends house so i started my car and place the gear into reverse or so i thought. my friend was guiding me out to the main road because it was dark making sure i dont hit his dads truck. he said that i was good to go and so i slowly began lifting my clutch and gassing slightly and then the car made a grinding sound which made me realize im not in fcuken gear. i threw the gear back to neutral and stepped out of the car and while outside i smelled this weird aroma. i was thinking to myself i cant fcuken believe that i just did that.
now im wondering if what i did is bad and if my baby is gonna be okay

just make sure you push it all the down and just make sure that its in gear before you move. sometimes i'll put it in gear and take it out a few times just to make sure it doesnt happen.

Yea you will be fine. Done it plenty of times. Like others have said, unless i can tell with 100% certainty that it went into gear, i will often take it back out of gear and put it back in. Also at night, you can watch for your reverse lights to click on to know your in reverse. (Although it is possible that the lights can come on without the car being in gear, its rare.)

OH MY GODDD YOU JUST CRUSHED YOUR VENTABULATOR BEARING!!!!
hah j/k. you're fine. i used to do that a lot when i first learned how to drive stick (in a 97 celica 9 years ago). i still have the car with 160K with the clutch that i learned manual on. talk about reliability.

I've done this a bunch of times, just like everyone else..
The little trick I use is that i don't let off the clutch unless I felt a little resistance click. It's the same feeling you typically get when shifting from 1st to 2nd, it's not smooth like in the higher gears..
And sometimes when I'm not sure, or I think it's being stubborn, I'll put it in first then back to reverse so that I feel the click..
///Little by little I've been getting more in tune with the tran, and it happens less..

yea, what i do a lot now (w/ the axial flow short shifter) is go in and out of reverse once or twice before i actually start going. w/ the short shifter, i can feel two clicks which means it's in.

I too have done this maybe on the occasion of once a month. The common failsafe to this is to throw it into first and then reverse from what I've heard and read. If you're on the slightest of an incline, I have found simply leaving it in the reverse gear while giving the slightest of pressure - so much as just leaving your hand on it - further into gear while rolling back (even if the wheels roll just a bit), it will slide completely into gear; THEN start letting out the clutch.
