Once Again, Engine light..

Once Again, Engine light..
I'm pretty sure this is somewhere else (and if so I apologize). I've noticed, while I was driving, that my check engine light came on so I took it to an auto shop for them to look up the code (which I unfortunately didn't get the number). Anyway, its a 2004 RX8 and hasn't went back to the shop for any recalls. The Auto Shop said it was an EVAP code and I "probably didn't close the gas lid tight enough." He then turned the light off. The light stayed off for a few days and I filled the car up with gas again and made sure the lid was tight... the light didn't come on. The next day, though, the light came back on... I've never left the keys in it or pumped gas while the car was on and I really don't have any money to waste by taking it to the mechanic every few days. It's got about 45,000 miles on it. Also, I've always heard if you crank it up and don't let the engine warm up the engine will flood and won't start... it actually happened to someone I know... Is there a recall for that to be fixed?
Thanks for your time guys/gals

I bet you were one of those ppl who never put effort in school, either paid someone to do hw/project for u or just copied everything from someone else.

Thanks duke, as for the other guy I don't really have time to look it up and read. I go to class from 8am - 2pm, work from 3pm-1am, and hw from 1am-3am...
Anyway, I figured I'd call the mazda dealer about the gas cap recall... or would it be faster to just buy a new gas cap from the store?

It has nothing to do with class/work/etc, it depends on your *willingness* to put effort into the matter, those *I dont have time, etc* is just an excuse.
The gas cap thing is not a recall, Dealership will "fix" it only if you are still under warranty.
According to the TSB, my area should be one of the places where they should replace my gas cap (Will drop below freezing temp.) I have a 05 and I never had this problem, I *Wipe clean* my gas cap like every 10-20 Fillup, so That might help a little.
Even when u're out of warranty, a brand new gas cap is only like 20 bux. no biggie.

My 2 cents.
It could be anything. The reason I say that is similar thing happened to my best friend's RX8. About a year after he bought his 2004 (used), the check engine light came on. So he took the car to the maz service center and they told him it was just an evap code. They reset the comp, told him to make sure to tighten the gas cap whenever he pumps gas, and sent him home.
So he started making sure he did tighten the gas cap.............but about a month later the light came back on. He took it to the service center again...........they told him the same thing........reset the comp...sent him home.
About two months later ...it came back on again.....he took the car in AGAIN. This time they actually checked (thank god), and found that there's some carbon deposit that needs to be cleaned out......so they did...........the light went out...sent him home.
The light came back on after a couple weeks.............so my friend as fed-up as he was...he talked to the manager of the service center to have him actually run the complete diagnostic.........and they finally found out that he needed a new intake manifold..........!! So they replaced the whole damn thing....gave him new spark plugs....starter...battery............, that turned the light off once in for all.... it never came back on ever since!
So I suggest you force them to run complete diagnostic until they actually find something....LOL....

Anyway, just replace the cap and call it a day (for now), some dealership, they're not going to even bother with *looking* at ur car if u tell them what code and problem it is ... they just gonna *here, take this gas cap* and they will write a service order with Mazda saying that they used 0.2 hours + gas cap to fix this problem ...

Thats funny, how can the EVAP(Small leak) code result in a replacement of the intake manifold ...

But again.....like it said ...it could be anything............. hopefully it's just a faulty gas cap in his case.
oh and....my friend never needed a new gas cap after all! haha
Anyway...I was just telling what happened to my friend's car............so loosen up your panties! no need to get technical with me:P haha.... I'm out!

I'm having this same problem. I replaced the gas cap and autozone turned the engine light off a couple months ago. A month ago it came back on for 2 weeks then turned off. A week later turned back on and still on. I'm sure I have the code somewhere but it read a large leak.

Well first I have to get $20 to buy the cap lol, I get paid Thurs though... then I need to find an autozone :S Since I moved to Atlanta I've never needed one. I hate that the light is on though RX8s have always been my favorite car, even over Porsche and the like (Dont ask why, I dont know). Hard to show off the car when the damn light wont go off, LOL

Yea, tell me about it... I also have community service to do on the weekends... 100 hours for speeding, go me -.- The weekends end up even worse cause community service 7am-3:30pm and work 4pm-1:30am plus homework =/

If it says leak, I would check it - sometimes a tech doesn't fit everything together right - and checking keeps the fire away -
Regular Mazda have engine lights go on when the Cat starts getting plugged with carbon - so I would suspect that as a kind of last resort...

oh and most tasteles you may be thinking "i dont have time for going in for recall work".
be advised one of the recalls for 2004 vehicles is the possibility of the FUEL TANK WARPING FROM HEAT AND THE CAR CATCHING ON FIRE . there were only 3 confirmed episodes of this in the states- please get the recalls done so we dont hear of you being the 4th

I had that problem... It was the gas cap and the sensor that triggers the EVAP leak. It took a year and three dealerships to find/repair the problem.
I love the RX8, but the majority of techs are clueless.

Yea, he wouldn't believe it anyway... besides, I don't know too much about cars in general, so an argument with him would be kind of pointless. I'm not worried about it, I still love the Rx8. Going to try the gas cap thing though. I don't ever recall him having a problem with his though.
