RX-8 Discussion General discussion about the RX-8 that doesn't fit in one of the specialty forums.

One of the more interesting “things” I’ve heard in a long while.

Heh - I had one guy at a gas station ask me if I was one of the X-Men (by the way, in a complete concidence I have the Oakley shades Cyclops wore in the first X-Men movie). I'm not sure what made me say it but my response was "Nah, I just stole their car!" He got a good chuckle out of it.

But I also have a group of kids in my neighborhood that bike around and yell "Nice car!" to me every time I drive home. It feels good! :D

I was going around a corner on day and an old guy and his wife were sitting at the red light in a convertible 2-seater Mercedes with the top down. As I turn the corner, the old guy nudges his wife an points. Both sets of eyes followed me al the way around the corner. That felt pretty cool!

One thing to note...my friend recently picked up a '91 NSX, and for some reason whenever we go crusing all eyes go to that car. Never mind the fact that it's bone stock and 13 years old, but even at meets, where there's many NSX and only my RX-8, I get much less glances. Guess that's the difference between "sports" and "exotic"...but I still like the 8 much better

Yeah, you can't really compare an RX-8 to an NSX.

A 3rd gen RX-7 on the other hand......

The love of this car is ageless. First full day of owning my RX8, I come out of the convenience store and walk to my car, there is a gentleman who must have been 85 if he was a day walking by. At first I thought this gentleman was walking so slowly because he was up in years, until to my surprise he shouts out "You have a beautiful car!".

Received an email at work from a co-worker on another floor whom I've never met and cannot even find anyone who knows her. The email began with "I heard a rumor that the new RX8 in the parking lot is yours - NICE!!..." then goes on to tell me of the Rotary she used to own in 74. How many people become famous at work for their car, especially if the price tag is < 90K.

All this in the first week of ownership. I'm guessing this car wouldn't be for the shy and introverted :D

Customers, and employees at work love my car. The kids love it especially. I tell them if they excel, they too can achieve their dreams.

Everyone in Houston seems to want to race me, whether it be a Mustang GT or a 4-cylinder pickup. It's really weird. Good thing I know I have nothing to prove. I'm just trying to get to school.

the very first day i was driving my car home from the dealership, i pulled up at a red light when a group of kids about 15 years olds were crossing. a kid says, "hey, that car is so awesome. i'll run across the street naked if you give it to me." he then proceeds to pull down his pants (with boxers on) and crosses the street. i said to myself, "this car is worth every penny"

I find it interesting that it would take a 15 year old boy to show you his boxers for you to realize that the RX-8 is worth every penny!

:D

One of my favorite incidents was during a trip to Publix to get a few groceries. After checking out, the young lady bagging my groceries offered to carry them out for me. I said, "That's okay, I think I can manage." She would not relent, however, saying, "I'll take them; there's this car I want to look at, anyway." I tried not to grin, as I suspected she was referring to my car. Sure enough, as we began approaching the car, she pointed out my car, and I said, "Oh, that is a nice car..." I used the key fob to pop the trunk, and she squealed, "I thought it might yours!" I took that as kind of a compliment. :D

My wife gets lots of attention when driving either of our rotaries. I am sure more than I really want to know about. But kids always stare and say things.
Two incidents stand out for me, once I came home and 3 kids were staring at the FD, they then proceeded to ask me for an autograph. I laughed and showed them the car and started it for them. Believe me, I will never forget that.
For the 8, I got it relatively early and many people had never seen one. I was out with a friend and a couple of his lady friends, and the one girl said, "Wow, what do you do, are you a rock star or something." She was not kidding so that was pretty cool.

I was at a light with my Velocity Red RX8....a couple of guys in a pickup next to me asked if the metal-flake was stock paint. (it was sunny out)..one of the guys then said "don't those cars rev high...to 12 grand?) I WISH!!

I also get a lot of the SUV people wanting to race me. What is it with those bone-heads?

I feel weird at stop lights these days with all the people staring at the car. Its funny, I was at a light with a Z4 and a Boxter and people were looking at my car...very cool.

My wife just called me and said a patient(H.S. girl) came in and said you have a cool car. My wife was driving her new Corolla XRS, a cool looking little car and she said the Toyota and the girl said no the Mazda> Small town and everyone knows about the car. Wow, its just a car but the looks and compliments I get for just picking out a car that alot of people can pick out is crazy. Just visited my Dad yesterday and a bunch of his coworkers came out to check it out. Everywhere I go people are staring and talking. Best of all, the ladies that look at you in your ride Men, you agree??

Yeah, what's with that?

The other day I'm passing a long line of vehicles that all seem to be content to cruise at 70-75 in the right lane of a two lane interstate. I'm going 80-82, enough to pass but not coming up on anyone so quick they'd be surprised.

Just after I pass this big pickup I see him in my rearview. He practically rolls the thing over in his rush to lurch behind me and catch up. He rides my rear bumper all the way to the end of the line of cars, while I refuse to be goaded into going any faster. He was in no hurry before. He had at least 2 miles to pass those folks before I showed up and he just sat behind them. But he's not gonna let me pass anybody without showing off.

At the first opening I move right to let him by. If he wants to go faster than 82mph in traffic that's okay with me. But no. He moves right and stays right on my bumper! What a total moron.

I still own and occasionally drive my Cherokee, but I don't go around challenging sports cars with it. It would have been entertaining to show him how well my brakes work. His damn truck would've been doing somersaults. I didn't of course.

I picked my daughter up after school this week and there were a couple of little boys walking along and one of them yelled "dang man you have the coolest car!" I stopped to let them come look at the interior (red/black) and they about wet themselves giggling like crazy when I opened the back door. Next thing I knew I had 25 to 30 kids swarming my car and my daughter was eating it up! She was giving little "tours" pointing out all the neat little things kids notice that adults don't give a crap about. It took 20 minutes to get the kids to move on and get home.

It was cute to see my daughter's reaction to all the attention too.

Actually, no, I'd have to agree with the earlier comment that our 8's seem to get more attention from other guys than from girls. But whatever, a compliment is a compliment! :D

MY weirdest encounter yet with a pickup truck happened this morning around 11:00. Had been at a 9:00 am 'Hysterical Society' meeting and was 2 blocks from home. A pickup was approaching and doing the 'drift effect' cited by Cubakid on he Canada Forum. "Oh, damn this one's going to cream my side. . do I slow and let him past me?"
He draws parallel and damn it if he didn't blow an air kiss. Hope it was for the car! The dude looked like ZZ Top..
