Seriously, a RX-8 is not a cheap car to maintain. Spark plugs, for example, can be found for $20 each. Four are required. Normal cars they are about $2.50. Then there's the gas mileage thing.
It is a wonderful car when it's in great shape. But, this car needs attention. Have you read about the flooding issue? If you have to use a mechanic for each repair, it's going to cost you lot's of money.
BTW, top speed in a manual model can be as much as 155mph. That could be reached if you were entered in the Silver State Classic rally. The automatic model is speed limited at 200kph.

Reason why I'm asking is because I'm getting mixed information. People are saying that the 8s are very powerful, have 230 hp, and 6.3 seconds for 0-60mph. Then I'm seeing other people say that they don't have a reach in a straight line race, only 130 mph.

I don't know which one is legit one but why would people buy this car when it only gets an average of 15 mpg and only had 130hp. That's way too weak for a "sports" car that has only that little power. Not worth it, imo.

I think you are not getting why people are saying your thread is pointless.
we do not like to talk about illegal road racing here if that's what you are aiming.
besides, 230hp and 6.3s is not fast in these days and the RX8 is not for straight line performance either.
the manual version ( assume you live in US) produces 232hp AT THE CRANK which is about 180hp at the wheel.
the auto version with 4 port engine produces 190hp about 130hp at the wheel.
rotary engines are not very economical 16mpg for 232hp IS very low hp/mpg.
like I said, if you look for straight line performance, you better do better research before buying one.

RX8sold4EVO 09-25-2011 08:51 PM

The Hyundai would win, manual trans and turbo 2.0 should put it in 1st place. 210hp +boost.
8 2nd place 212 hp in automatic iteration
Tc 3rd place 180hp
Lancer GTs 4th place 168 hp

Really, why would you create this thread? Just do some research on each of the cars and you'll find your answer.

You obviously don't know much about the '8 if you're talking about drag racing it. It's NOT a straight-line performance car. It's NOT a numbers car. If you want something that will win light-to-light races (albeit those are immature and dangerous) then get something with more torque - many RX-8 owners complain their car doesn't have enough torque, although I think it is perfectly adequate.

The '8 will beat those cars in the twisties, so bring it to actual sanctioned events and you should do pretty well (assuming you have experience track driving).

DO RESEARCH.

and delete this thread.

Don't delete this thread. I really want to know what is the fastest one. I know somebody out there knows whats up, c'mon people.

roblucci 09-25-2011 11:59 PM

I've actually been researching which is why I said before how I keep getting different information. I just don't know which are the true legit ones and I really don't have enough time to research into the deep details of this car.

And yes, I'm a noob. Which is why I tried seeking help in this forum.

To the guys who posted random shit, no I'm not deleting this thread. So really I just wasted your time. BUT if I didn't really waste your time, that just means you guys have no life

soo.....

Actually, I think most of the people are being more mature, if anything.

1 mile is still a stupid question.

You're basically asking which car has the highest top speed, which is an irrelevant statistic for most cars. It's also something you shouldn't try testing, which it sounds like you might have an interest in. Acceleration is generally a more important performance measure of a car. Performance cars should be built with sanctioned events in mind... You wont be reaching those speeds at an auto-x, 1/4 mile and road tracks. I can only hope you weren't thinking of bringing an automatic 8 to an event like the texas mile... that would be a little embarrassing.

You sound young. I was young when I got my 8 and I'm not going to pretend that I never did anything stupid in the 8. That said, I chose the 8 specifically out of respect and pure love for what the car was. If my assumption about your age is correct, then it's definitely not a good sign that your concern for choosing the car is whether or not it is faster than your friends' cars. I'd have to say I was above average in terms of responsibility when I was younger... I'd hate to think of what kind of trouble I would have found myself in if I did just a few more stupid things in the 8.

If you're looking for a car you can respect, appreciate and come to love for what it is... stick around and do research until you're ready to buy. They're great cars and will provide some of the best fun you can have.

If you're looking for a great straight line car to beat your friends, look elsewhere. The 8 is not slow, but it's definitely not fast when compared to quite a few other cars available. It's still fast enough to get you into trouble. If I am correct in my assumptions about your age.... I know you probably think you're different, a better driver, more responsible and wont do stupid stuff. You probably think that I can't make all of these assumptions about you because I don't know you and that the mistakes others have made wont happen to you. Unfortunately, I'm probably pretty accurate.

Yes, I am young, 18 to be exact. But I do not plan to buy this car right away, but most definitely in two years when I transfer to a university. And yes I do believe you're somewhat accurate in your last paragraph. I don't believe I'll be the best driver, wouldn't do stupid stuff but I do know once I get my first car, I will take care of it. Yes you don't know me, but I do know once I get something I've wanted for so long, I make sure it won't be neglected but taken care of instead.

And it's not only that I'm a noob with 8's but with CARS in general so that's why I'm asking all these stupid questions because I don't know anything about what a decent RANGE of miles to figure out which car would top out at the end. So really, I'm just throwing numbers out there. But then again, I still have two years to gain the knowledge needed soooo :Peace:

Wind Dance 09-26-2011 03:38 AM

Well you created a public thread so people will voice there opinion...

Secondly, 1 or even 1000 mile run is not even close to ideal test.
Hell getting the 8 close to the 1/4 mile times that magazines publish is hard to do. Since you are so young stick with a civic or integra. You'll get more bang for the buck. 8 maintenance is no joke and for straight line performance you are looking at the wrong car even with a modifications. Live by the corner and you'll appreciate what this car has to offer.. Live on straights... Let's just say you won't be blowing any doors off.

alnielsen 09-26-2011 06:36 AM

Oh, come on people, lighten up on the dude. When I was 18, if there was such a thing as an internet forum, I may have posted something similar about one of my car fantasies. Since it didn't I just let it play out in my mind until I moved on to something else.
rob, if you want to have the ability to speak your mind. expect others to do the same.
And, don't spam my email inbox with 10 reports of infractions.

Wingznut 09-26-2011 07:53 AM

I've owned more than a dozen cars in my adult years on this earth, and I can easily say that the RX-8 is my favorite.

It's not the fastest car I've ever owned (not even close), but there's so much more to appreciate about this car. Like others have said, if you are ready to appreciate those things, then stick around. If you are just looking for a car to race all of your friends in a straight line, there are better options out there.

And yes, people can be hard on you here. But you have to admit... Asking what car is faster in a 10-mile straight line race, is a pretty stupid question, no matter your age. I have never ever seen statistics on a "10-mile race".

Things might have gone better if such a stupid thread had been placed in the Lounge ......

The Lounge would have been a perfect place for this and no one would have cared and the likely hood of being flamed drastically reduced or mitigated.

Hesselrode 09-26-2011 09:09 AM

Rob,
My friend had a Genesis Coupe 2.0 Track edition. With little money he got up to 300HP. Our cars won't get to 300HP with little money. First off the Genesis already is turbo. With just a programmer you can get a decent gain. For a gain like that on the 8 would have to be force induced (turbo/supercharger). The engine is usually something that goes out in the 8 and roughly 4-5 grand to get it replaced, by a mechanic. I did mine myself and it cost about $1500 with parts and rental of a frame lift. The Genesis also has a little bit better amenities inside, like bluetooth and hands free. If you had money I would say do the 8, cause in the end IMO it would be faster and better, if it was 6MT, but that one definately don't get cause it is an auto. Autos have more engine problems than manuals. Also, MPG on the 8 ranges from 12-26. I got 26MPG once, and have never achieved this again, but usually between 18-20 MAX. I was going 60 on an interstate behind an 18-wheeler, and thats how I got 26MPG. This is just my 2 cents, it all boils down to what you are trying to achieve and how deep your pockets go. I like the looks of the 8 the best out of all those, but maybe you aren't going for that. Hope this helps.

I'm a little biased...

I have a 07 RX8 6spd auto GT, and tracked behind the Genesis like this on a curvy 90 mph top speed track.

He was holding me up, and not letting anyone by ( so I guess he was racing and slower).

Is this test good enough?

no, cuz autos have 135mph speed limit.

Not even!

125 mph!

Want a good top end car?

Go buy a used C5 Vette: It'll hit 162 or more really quick, and feel stable.

KDispel 09-27-2011 11:49 PM

C5 Vette might be a little out of his price range, and he'll smoke his friends and probably destroy the car in the process.
