Only at 12k miles...little early for this isn't it?

Just put my car through inspection at a local station. I passed, but to my surprise the tech told me I have about a month left on my brakes. I have had my car 1 year...and there's about 11500 miles on it.

Shortly after they started shrieking like banshees. I sound like a dump truck when I stop.

My rotors are rusted like crazy, too. Is that normal? I saw a thread below where someone said there was an MRI out regarding it?

I drive in the city, so I expect my brakes will be burned up a bit faster than normal, but 12k miles? Holy crap.

maybe that brake TSB will cover it. check it out at your dealership. don't tell them anything about taking it to an inspection station and that the brakes are low. just go in telling them it squeaks like hell, then they'll probably cover it under the TSB

Taking my in again after they tried to just resurface the front rotors and front replace the pads. Got a vibration coming from the front last week at hard stops. Basically telling me the Rotors are trash. Complained to the Vice President of Darcars Mazda and going in tomorrow morning to have all 4 rotors replaced and all the pads replaced. Complain a little and you'll get somthing done.

Actually I was reading through my warranty last night and it did mention something about wearable parts being covered for 12k miles as long as there is no evidence of abuse. I think it said something about brakes as well. That does seem a bit early to need brakes, you should read your warranty manual that came with the car and go talk to a dealer. If your still under 12k you might be able to get new brakes from Mazda.

Let's not forget, this is a sports car. I have a freind with a Porsche fitted with PCCB's, he needed new pads at 3500 miles, 400 bucks a corner too. Sacrifices must be made for braking power. When you do get them replaced you might try a different pad.

if you're not, then there is a brake pad issue

Nope, it's manual.

My driving is normal. I might brake harder than your average grandma, but I'm certainly not slamming on my brakes regularly.

Damn...sorry to hear that. I hope it's just faulty pads or something unique to your car and not a problem with most 8s.

Keep in mind, the tech doing the inspection may have a vested interest in making you think you're gonna need new pads soon. If you know what I mean.

Well, I only have just about 9500 miles, and noticed slight squeaking yesterday for the first time. A bit of squeaking today as well, but not consistent - I'll have to keep an eye on it and see if it needs attention. I also live in the city and brake slightly above average, but 9500 miles is way to early for any kind of brake replacements. Don't know if rusty rotors have anything to do with this (and boy, they are rusty).

What can be done about rotor rust? Isn't rotor rust basically normal? I see brand new cars in the lots of the dealerships with rusted rotors...

Just called dealership. Apparently I'm outside the 12 month OR 1 year "adjustment" period. Not sure what that's gonna mean exactly, but we'll see.

It's probably just cheap brake pads. I can clean my wheels to a shine, and within about 3 days, they are already darkening from brake dust. And I am a far cry from being hard on my brakes. When I go in for my first oil change, I am going to casually ask them if all that brake dust, and rusty rotors is normal for a car with less than 5K miles on it.

Mine were squeeking too, at exactly the same point too my car has less than 12k miles on it. They told me at Mazda that they have new brake pads for my exact problem (squeeking when applying light brake pressure) and it's all covered under warranty. GL!

Llathos, there was a brake squeak problem that Mazda put a notice out on -- I had that problem and took mine in. They fixed it. Now, I'm almost at 20K and I'm getting squeaks again but I think its the front brake pads worn out. Just take the car in to the dealer and it should all be covered under warranty, no problem.
