Only Getting 217 miles to a tank max
#76
Your description is frighteningly similar to my own experiences but I average a couple miles per gallon less. I to have a spread sheet tracking every fill up and the accompanying mileage.
I know exactly what you mean about watching the fuel gauge and to make things worst the fuel gauge is very non-liner. One moment your at 1/2 a tank then 3 miles later your an 1/8 less. The outside temperature plays a big roll in how the gauge responds.
After a great deal of looking for something wrong with this car I am beginning to think that the terrible gas mileage is just worst under some driving conditions. Never had a car get remotely this poor of fuel mileage.

In my usual city-only driving I usually get 275-300 km (171-186 miles) before the light comes on. I've kept a spreadsheet tracking my mileage since I bought the car and it is pretty consistently 13-15 mpg. I have traveled 15697.4 km since I bought the car and have put in 2526.1 litres of gas. That's an average of 16.09 litres/100 km or 14.62 mpg. I did get 21.02 mpg on the drive to Indianapolis this past summer.
I've never given 2 ***** about the fuel economy in any of my others cars, yet I obsessively track the mileage of the 8 and find myself staring at the fuel gauge altogether too much.
Why?? Could it be that the 8's mileage is just that bad? Could it be the constant carping on the board about it?
No...I have concluded that it is (a) because the 8 has a small tank for a car with such poor fuel economy and, more importantly, (b) there are so many ticks on the fuel gauge that it IS possible to watch the needle go down!

To those who say the 8's tank is not too small...I get in a bit over 50L when the light comes on. Do I want to push it when the gauge is iffy as it is? No. The gauge is dead accurate in our Bimmer...when the light goes on I can put in 55L on the dot. And when it is on E the full 63L.
But back to size...compare to the competition:
Mustang: 61L
350Z: 76L
328i: 61L
Audi TT: 55L
Cayman: 64L
Vette: 68L
And all those cars get better than or at least equal mileage to the 8.

I have an 04 with 25k on it and always run premium. I usually get just over 200 miles before the gas light kicks on. I drive both city and highway. I often find myself driving faster than everybody else, I just can't help it.

Like others I keep an XLS of each fill-up. Here are my stats...
2005 (bought new 11/06), 6spd, 17K miles
I drive about 30 miles each way to work. 27 of which is on the Hwy.
MPG
Max - 20
Min - 14
Avg - 18
Miles between fill-ups
Max - 257
Min - 119
Avg - 211
I typically fill up after breaking the 1/4 tank mark and before the empty light turns on.

I know this topic was a dead horse about 3 years ago and threads keeping popping up, but I have to ask: Wasn't the Renesis marketed as an engine capable of delivering high output with decent fuel economy when compared to the older rotaries? What did the different generations of RX-7's get? It couldn't have been worse.

Ya its 217mpg to the fuel light... so i guess it's not terrible... but 240-250ish would be nice. But im gonna try the coils and apparently the dealer has updates so they've told me, or are they full of ****?

There could be a lot of variables from how the motor was broken in to your driving habits, including your gear shifting. I was very careful on how I took care of the motor the first two thousand miles, never revving beyond 5k rpm. Under a normal driving, my gas light comes on ~225 miles. And I can only put 13.5 gallon or so, which means under the worse case scenario, I could squeeze 270 miles to a tank of gas. I could also hit 300 + miles to a tank when driven strictly on the freeway.

well i have 50,200 or so on my 2004 6speed g.t..and from the day i bought it with 26 miles on it the mileage has always no matter how easy or hard i drove 210 was the best.be it highway or city i get crappy m.p.g. but on that note i get miles and miles of fun and enjoyment of the car i have gotten to love no matter what recall or thoughts of other car owners. there are times in life that you get that feeling no one else can see or hear and it's rare to have a feeling no one else feels but it's a thrill a minute in my rx8 be it at a red light or kicking *** down the highway i love every second of it.so lets all really hope this damm gas nightmare go's away!!

my last tank of gas, i just filled up today. 295 miles, 21.22 miles per gallon. fill up was 13.9 gallons. light came on at 273 miles, and i drove another 22 miles to my local gas station. i still had another gallon of gas. last 5 miles were city, i babied it, shifting at 2.5k-3k.
but, that goes to show you. you can drive approximately 60 miles after the empty light comes on. useful info if you ever really need it. 60 liters = ~15.9 gallons
light came on at 273
plus 22 miles to gas station
plus 2 gallons in the tank, 40 miles worth of fuel
total, ~62 miles
thats not empty at all. lol.

I want to know how many gallons are really usable in our tanks.

After reading through the four pages, I think I should post about this.
I also have an 05 that was getting bad gas mileage just like the thread starter.
My car was strugling to get 210 miles on a tank; it didnt matter how I drove, I always got 210-215 miles on a tank.
Last month, I took the car to the dealer to have the latest PCM flash and check the cat-converter to see if it was clogged.
The dealer updated the car with the last PCM ("M" update I believe)update and I began to premix with 4 oz fully synthetic 2-stroke oil, and since then, I've noticed a significant increase in mileage. Now I am consistently getting about 250-260 miles on 13.5gal of gas, which is about 19 mpg. I am more than happy with the results.
BTW, I don't drive like a granny to achieve this mileage. I would say my driving stayle is fairly moderate.
So, for those of you having bad gas mileage, I would recommend you try those two things (PCM update and premix).
Some people on the forum say "you bought the wrong car" if you complain about the gas mileage but I don't think you should be getting less then 17-18mpg with moderate driving.
With the gas prices soaring sky high, I think it is a legitimate concern that needs to addressed if your car is struggling to get 210 miles on a tank...that is just my opinion of course.
