oops
I had to break into my 8 this weekend with a drill (scary!), we drilled through the "popper" of the back window in the suicide door. I know it sounds stupid but we had our reasons, like we were to far to wait for a locksmith… plus like an idiot the car was running.
The part I need is the black round cap that the “popper” screws into, it’s on the outside of the window. Mazda wants $185 for the entire popper, but all I need is that dang cap!
I made a temp fix, but would like it back to normal. Anyone have any ideas?

So how did you lock the door with the car running? I think my car will not allow me to lock an open door when the engine is running? You can only lock it when the door is closed and presumbly that can only happen when somebody is in the car....

Well I tried locking it by holding the inside door latch open and manually locking it... but with the engine running it auto unlocks every time. Neat feature.... you must have really done something screwy to lock yourself out.

That's been my experience too. I've bumped my lock-switch when getting out of the car to check the mail (with the car running). Even though the switch gets pressed in (fully locked), it immediately springs back out (unlocked) refusing to let me lock my keys in the car (thank god for that!!).

As far as how to get the part without spending $185, I'd check totalled RX-8's, or people that have had that whole panel replaced (the rear door I s'pose). Shouldn't be hard to convince somebody with a spare dented up door or a totalled car to part with the piece for a few bucks.
I know somebody has been selling a totalled 8 on ebay. How much less would he get without that little cap?

let me try again.
With the key in and the engine running you can lock the door with another key, using the keyhole, place key in hole, turn.
Lock button on fob wont work (wont even open the boot), neither will trying the lock latch on the internal door handle.
Using 2 keys is the only way I know how to lock the car with the engine running.

Last night I filled up for gas, left keys dangling in ingnition as to stop annoying noise, got out - checked oil and cleaned windows. I shut the door as I passed by it but dont remember locking it. When I went to leave I was locked out, keys dangling from the ignition.
Only saving grace was when I got out I popped the hood and trunk at same time to check oil and get oil if I needed it. I kicked in the rear center cover and fished the keys with my golf ball retriever.
I guess the keys can be locked in the car even when it is not running.
DON"T DO THIS AT HOME!!!!

That is the fail-safe, ...the only way to lock the car while engine running is with a 2nd key turning the lock once outside and the door shut. This is the only way unfortunately to start the RX-8, and let it warm and walk away at the same time...all leaving it locked; and when you come back 5 minutes later, use your 2nd key to manually unlock the door.
