Well, I'm glad you are OK and I hope you learn from this. I won't give you too much of a hard time because I think everyone else pretty much told you what had to be said.
Friend, you have people who love you and there are others who are loved on the road...there is no room to be irresponsible like that, for the sake of your loved ones and the loved ones of others on the road.
Be careful out there!
Wow, the RX8 is just such a great car. Look at what his 8 looks like and he had nothing more than a seatbelt bruise...that's just great!
New baby comming so while I would love to buy some stuff off of you I don't think my wife would give me the green light...lol. Of course...I'll check out your parts of sale thread regardless...lol.

The airbag will only deploy in an accident if a passenger is present. I suspect the RX-8 has the same feature.
I was surprised because many 2005s will sense no passenger and will also sense under-weight passengers (which indicates either a book-bag or a child) and thus disable the airbag.
The side-airbags are not linked. If you are struck on that side they deploy on that side and not the other. I expect he landed almost squarly on his driver's side (with an impact similar to a t-bone), then rolled. Rolling would not be sensed like an impact on the passenger side, thus no passenger airbags.
RX-Aight, the airbag system isn't based on total damage it is based on an impact of the exact right angle and minimum force. If the passengers are thrown towards the driver's door by a side-impact against the driver's door then the passenger side airbags will not help anything.
When I hit a deer it was $3,000 in parts alone just to replace the two front airbags (significant portion of a total of slightly over $10,000 in body work). If the 4 side airbags had deployed for no reason that would have been thousands more in parts and labor all for no return.
RXEvolV, would you clarify for the group's curiosity? Do you mean no insurance at all or do you mean liability only? No insurance at all is a crime in most states, but if you aren't currently financing the car through the bank there's nothing that says you must carry collision/comprehensive - it's a gamble (and a personal choice) either way. I think of it as a really, really big deductible.

I drive rentals alot since I work in consulting and travel every week...every car I have had that has the auto-detect air bags also has an indicator. I dont know if its mandated or just for convenience. My sisters corolla has the new airbags and it has the indicator as well. I know the 8 doesnt have these "smart" airbags. RXEvolV, until you answer the insurance question, people are going to assume not so positive things about you. You have answered other questions, but your replies seem to avoid that one. Glad you are OK though.

It's simple. As this car didn't suffer a significant frontal impact, the front airbags didn't deploy.
The drivers curtain airbag deployed because the car got a big hit on that side during the rollover.

There are buckle switches, but these are only used to effect during frontal collisions. If a front seatbelt is unbuckled at impact then the threshold for the second stage charge is lowered. The front airbags fire at one of two rates. If the impact is "hard" then two inflators deploy the airbag and it comes out at a greater rate. "Softer" frontal impacts will only fire one inflator. If the belt is unbuckled, then the second inflator will fire at a lesser frontal impact speed (ie, the bag will come out hard during a low speed collision) therefore protecting the idiot who was too stupid to protect himself.
This will happen whether the seat was occupied or not. There is a modifier to what I have stated above, though. The RX-8 also has seat position sensors. If the seat if in a forward position (ie, the driver has short legs and is close to the wheel) then the airbag only fires one inflator.

Wow, u guys r harsh. this guy almost died. just wanted to add that next time u start to lose traction, just let DSC do its job. ebrakes never help at doing anything but keeping the car from rolling down hills when parked. glad ur ok, i have a friend that wrecked his car like urs and now he has brain damage that will impair him for life. think about that before u try something stupid like that again. yeah sucks that he didn't have insurance, but the main thing is he is alive and well.

On the subject of insurance: If the car is paid for, in full, then no one gives a crap if he has collision/comprehensive, hell, even medical.
The liability part is the important part for me and everyone else. I don't know what Cali's laws are on liability ins., but if you didn't have liability then you are a bastard. I just see too many people getting effed over from being hit by an uninsured/underinsured motorists. If you did, then it was your choice to not have coll./comp. and I don't care.
All that aside, good thing you're ok.
