i have to say it but you really need to do some searching. yes, there are things to look out for especially in a 2004 but if you know what to look for you should be fine. as for price, we need more info before helping you out. please do some searching around the forums and if you still have questions, then ask them.

I think it's a good buy. I got my '04 with 11.9k miles on it for 19k. Sport pkg. 6mt yellow.
Apparently, no one wants the colour because it attracts too much attention i.e. losers who key cars - leading to a 4k drop from original price (23k) with a bb value at 27k.

I got a 2006 for 23k, so i would say 18k is steep for an 04. This is the best car i have ever owned because of the tranny and the engine. It is fun as hell to drive and handles like its on rails.
What options are on the 04.
ps. mine is a Grand touring model with the HIDs, sun roof and DSC

Ill tell you what problems the RX8 has. NONE, but only if you can follow simple instructions. Dont drive short distances...aka dont start the car and turn it off because there is a chance is could flood. Also remember to check the oil once in a while as you may need to top it off, not a big deal at all.
The 04 models was the first year, so i would not buy it because thats the year the RX8 had mad recalls. Get an 05 06 or 07

I's not that bad of a deal. Especially with so little miles on it. Just make sure all the recalls were done. I'm sure you could make them go down a 1k. But I don't think much more thatn that.

I'll cast a slightly dissenting vote...
...after doing some (a bunch of!) research to find a blue one with all those packages and under 18K miles, the best I could do on an '04 within a 500 mile radius (blue only, that is) was $18,900. It was at a dealer, yes you could find other colors for cheaper, yes I did talk to people with higher mileage for around the same price, and etc.
Turns out this particular '04 had issues, so I went to an '05 with 9K miles for $21,200. Yes to all the aforementioned items, but for some reason the blue one was particularly hard to find within about 1000 miles of Nashville. I checked the RX8Club classifieds first, then Cars.com, Autotrader.com, and Ebay. This was the best all around deal I found, so there it was.
There's also lots of people who have and love their '04's...how can you blame 'em? If price is a big concern, I think you're good and still within a respectable warranty period. If money is no object, then an extra $5K for an '06 is a really sweet deal.
Dude, make your best decision and drive on!

ok, all the fan boys have spoken, now to the issues
First, it's an 04, which has some issues that follwing years doesn't. Now this car doesn't get great milage to start ( the average is 16-19mpg), but some 04's were getting as low as 9-12mpg, with no explaination from mazda as to why so great a difference with the results of "it's normal" from the dealerships. Many people who were getting these mpg issues traded them in.
The 04's had some tranny/clutch issues, but most of these have been corrected by either mazda or the previous owners having to fork over the buck.
Flooding issues were an issue on the 04's that has seemed to be corrected by reflashes, and most 05's + haven't had this issue.
All year rx8's have been subject to engine issues, with loss of power/stalling issues, caused by carbon buildup and compression loss. Some here will tell you that if you take care of the car exactly the right way, that this will not happen to you, but that is not true. A large number of engines have been replaced, some of those replacements have been replaced, and at least 2 of those replacement replacements have been replaced. I will say this is mainly a heat related issue and most are happening down in the south to a very small number of cars, but not all, and one guy in canada is on his 4th engine.
Mazda has increased the warranty on the engines to 5 years 60K to try to calm the RX8 community down, but does have a video out showing that they do not count complaints from RX8 owners against the dealership (read into that what you want ).
Stock tires are undrivable in winter. Many ex owners have found this out.
Over all it is a great car with some flaws, unfortunately, those flaws may be major, but so far, mazda is covering it. It handles unbelievably, seats four comfy, nice interior, looks exotic, revs to 9400rpm, and can be bought cheap.
I've had mine almost 3 year, it's an 04 and other then a dead battery, never let me down.
I would take it for an extended ride to see if it's one of the gas guzzlers, but if it does ok, I would recommend getting it.
