This reminds me of when my friends and I would pick an arbitrary car type/make and honk at that kind all day.

I've acknowledged a Miata, a Mini, and some guy in a Corvette only because they noticed my car first. I try to be polite to other people with not so ordinary cars. I always try to wave at 8's when I'm in mine. I also wave to every motorcyclist when I'm on my bike (not that some people on Harleys even look at me). Tried to catch the attention of a guy with a new Lotus Elise (nice car!), but he was trying hard not to look at me. The least he could've done was notice that I was pretty!

So after posting in this thread yesterday, sure enough, on the way home I stopped by the grocery store and I saw a gray 8 in the parking lot approaching me. I was all set to wave when I noticed it was driven by a girl (shocking to me) and she looked pretty good too. So then I was really getting set to wave big and loud when I noticed she had a dude in the passenger seat, it could have been her boyfriend/husband/brother or whatever... but the dude looked big and hulking, so I decided not to wave and draw attention to myself.

Maybe it's not a good idea to wave to every single rx8 I see.

Back when I had my 1st generation & a half RX-7 (1985 RX-7 GS), the "wave" between owners was to "wave" the headlights using the headlight up/down button - and people did this ALL the time. Like 95% when I had mine ...

When my dad had his Porsche, he had a switch that would wink one of the lights. I thought that was the coolest thing. Not sure if he actually did it or not. But I've seen people do it before.

When driving with my NA Miata, I always do the wave - pop up headlight. I get a return about one out of four times.

I've only had ladies wave to me (I'm sure not because of me, don't get that idea). There's this one kid I see all the time and he goes out of his way to avoid acknowledging me, primping his hair in the mirror and stuff, heehee. I think he wants to be the only person on the planet with an RX-8.

Wink

Just got an idea of what our owner to owner wave can be. Got the idea from an interview with David Dimbledey on Top Gear (2005.05.03, 06x06). He talks with Clarkson about which cars he's had, one of them being the rotary powered NSU R0-80, notorious for its apex seals wearing off. Since its engine was under warranty, the manufacturer repaired it.

His joke about the wave to other owners is showing the number fingers representing how many rebuilds youve had.

We could do the same for how many miles to the gallon we get over the manufacturer's quote.

I drove mine home last weekend and went to the auto parts store to get some wax and when I go out of the store there was another owner sitting there waiting on me to talk to me about the car, and even handed me a card with a invitation to this site ( airlockrx) but so far thats all I have seen around here ( charleston WV) but i know there are a few more around that I have seen before I got mine.

If you want a return wave...

...then start waving at Miatas. They tend to be pretty into the "brotherhood" thing, and they don't hesitate to acknowledge drivers of RX-7s or RX-8s. After I sold my Miata, it took quite awhile to stop waving at them. Now that I have my RX-8, I've had zero waves returned from other RX-8ers but a pretty high proportion from MX-5ers.

Agreed...wave at other Mazdas. It's all 'bout the Zoom Zoom ...

I have a Miata and get waves ALL the time...far more do wave than those who don't. Unfortunately, and I've had my 8 less than 3 weeks, but I haven't even SEEN any other 8's to wave at. The only time I've seen another 8 in the past 2 weeks is while cruisin' in my Miata.

Still, this car does draw attention. I've almost started to wish I picked up one in a less conspicuous color (Silver - bling!) so that it wouldn't get stared at so much. Mebbe that's why silvers have the curse...people are entranced lookin' at it and lose control of their faculties.

Yeah, I get huge attention from most of the really riced cars, especially the really pathetic Hondas with a grapefruit cannon exhaust and 56 primer-colored body panels glued on.
OMG yes...makes me chuckle...

Strange--even when I was in my gen 1 Eclipse, I got waves, but nill with "el ocho" here. Unless you count my buddy Bob. He loved the car so much after driving mine, he went out the next day and got one himself! We wave at each other all the time, but that's not really the same...

I always imagine the Eclipse, Civic and Z drivers are thinking - "I coulda had an RX-8" (along the lines of "I coulda had a V8" - remember those old commercials?)
This would describe last weekend for me, on a trp to the desert. Every one of them would pull up 'acting bad' and then look at the car with this 'wish I had one of those looks'. It was too funny....

I got so fed up with 8 owners not waving back that I decided not to do it when i see a silver one coming the other way yesterday. I told myself, "Dont make yourself look stupid, they never wave back." As they are passing me, the driver AND passenger wave enthusiastically. I tried to get my hand outside but by the time I did, they were gone. Damit, now I'm the ******* in the 8 who doesnt wave.

This is why we must not get discouraged. KEEP WAVING...no matter how foolish you look!

:span: what i really think is most people are in a state of mind where as the time it takes the brain to know what's going on it's too late!i try and wave at most people when you get an eye to eye contact.sometimes when you blow the horn other people don't get it .so i will try to catch you all when i see you and try and catch a wave,a tap of the horn or a flash of the lights..... see ya
