People are really pushing me to NOT get an RX8 :(

well from reading your original post, sounds like you are worried about buying a 8, due to your friends and these ppl outside of the community KNOWING SO MUCH about the rotary engine. so if you need your friends to tell you what car to buy, sounds like the civic would be the best car for you.
not trying to be mean here , but i sure wouldnt pick a car because what my friends think about them. any how if you do decide to get a 8 grats and welcome to the club. but wht ever car you get good luck.

Agreed. The RX8 is a niche car. You can't haul anything. It gets terrible gas mileage at premium price. It's down right frustrating in a traffic jam. Some even complain about the air conditioning.
On the other hand, it's in a class by itself when it comes to looks. It has a "cool" factor like no other car -- be ready to get looked at, because it draws looks. It's usually the most unique car within an eyeshot of anyplace that you are, and always the prettiest girl in the parking lot. (At least mine is.)
The engine can be hammered. There's nothing like being stuck behind a loafer in the left lane, waiting for an opportunity to go 6/4 - lane switch - pass - left lane again, without having to worry about redlining. (And just knowing that anyone with a pulse admired what you just did.)
This car provides a number of things that you can't get in any other car. It's all a matter of whether the compromises are worth it to you. Let me assure you: you're gonna pay to drive it!

the rx8 plainly sucks, and all of us know this, and most of us, if given the choice between our 8 and some other car, we would choose the other car
but we just don't have the money!! wah!!!

Thanks a lot guys. Im deffinatley not looking for the redlight to redlight action. Im 19, but I dont agree with street racing. I will however open it up on some of the back roads. I have some great twisty roads near me, and they are perfect for this sort of car!! Ide deffinatley be getting a 6 speed, AT isnt even an option.
What woud I need to look out for on an 04 6speed?

This is strickly my opinion. You can't judge the RX8 by the year or model when it comes to wheather or not you're going to have the common issues with it. You're taking your chances with any model you buy.. ( any car you buy).
Not all 04 At's are full of issues - you'll find plenty of people on here that havent had a problem yet. That also doesnt mean you won't have a problem either.
Same with the MT's - I've read plenty of those have their own problems as well. That also doesnt mean you'll have a problem either.
It boils down to the car you're looking at buying.

If you need to buy an older one to save money, consider the price of an extended warranty or a quality aftermarket warranty if the factory warranty is expired.
I'm not trying to scare you here... the cars are as reliable as antying else out there, probably even moreso than an EVO or WRX (alternative rides).
I've driven and raced rotaries for 23 years, and can tell you that, if you know how to properly maintain a rotary, it will last longer than any piston-powered counterpart that makes as much power. Mazda tends to over-engineer their engines, including the rotary. The folks who have problems with them are the ones who blindly modify them, don't follow the mfg. recommended maintenance, and just plain beat the living snot out of them without any regard to the consequences.
Even the FD RX-7 would have a reputation of being more reliable if so many people didn't modify them. They dump $10K-$15K in modifications to get 50-100 more rwhp, and then cry when the thing breaks. Whahhhh! The same would go for just about any perofrmance car.

I hear what you're saying and I hope that's true, but I considered myself to be a great owner, followed mfg's maintenance to a T, revved the car to 8K several times a day, and yet am still getting a new engine at 68K. I do do a lot of highway driving, cruising at 4K, so that's the only thing I can think of that may have killed it.
Maybe it was the "LPG 25NFA, Adire SF7, Dayton RSS265HF-4 10" sub in a 4080 box Powered by JL Audio 300/4, Alpine MRD-M1005" adding too much weight

Two completely different cars... the Z has only 2 seats and 2 doors. Only the RX-7 and Z were in the same class, and the RX dominated model-year to model-year.
If considering alternatives to an RX-8, you have to consider options with four doors, 4 seats, rear-wheel drive (or AWD), and handle exceptionallywell. Such as:
Audi A4 (AWD)
Cadillac CTSv
Mitsu EVO (AWD)
Subie WRX (AWD)
BMW 3 series & M3
Mercedes C series
Lexus IS 350 & ISF
Pontiac G8 (puke)
...and the RX-8 costs less than all of them (except a loaded RX-8 costs a little more than a base G8).
If you're considing a Z car, there are better alternatives that offer only 2 seats and 2 doors.

When I was getting mine, everyone told me the same thing. After I got it, I see the envy in everyone's eyes. I especially like the fact that I brought the lightning yellow and they wound up discontinuing the color. Except for my battery dieing I haven't had any issues other than regular maintenance. Finding parts are difficult though and you usually have to wait on the parts. I recently had my struts done and it took me 2 weeks to get them in.
