AZ HEAT

have ours since October, so far, heat is bearable, except for the couple 100+ days that we have had this year. i subscribe to the "reline a day" theory, but i also follow basic rules such as not screaming the engine and brakes before i park. oil coolers come on after a drive back from werk, otherwise so far, all is well. the engine does not get as hot as the fd's. also, remember jap a/c (personally, it is cool enough for me) is not like FORD a/c.

Hey Guys!!

good luck with getting you 8's. I've had mine since november and it seems to do just fine so far. Of course mine's black with the black & red leather so it does get a tad warm on some days. Would you two like me to keep you informed of RX-8 meets we are doing?

I didn't have one either at 19; it's cool man. It's taken me 10 years of finally building a career to be able to get this car; and I'm making payments at that :D I can honestly say the appreciation is much deeper than it would have been had I not worked so hard to get it. And yes I know, I hated hearing that kind of thing too. If I'd only known then...

performance

hmmm...i guess i should read a little better or at least s l o w e r. with regards to performance, i do not differeniate between the 8 and any other vehicle. generally, all passenger vehciles run smoother/better/ whatever with cooler weather. definately no performance loss that i can tell if that was what you were referring to.

well i wasnt meaning "performance" i ment how it does in the way of overheating in the heat here in phoenix. i was just wondering about the over heating issue cause i have read a few threads on here that had to do with this. I didnt want to go buy one and come to find out that it overheats easy here in az. From the sounds of things it does pretty good out here.

Just wanted to bump this thread as I have just taken an 8 out for a test drive (GT) and noticed that when I stopped in traffic the A/C really warmed up even though it's not that hot a day today.. I know there is a 'fix' out there for A/C's but I thought that only applied to older 8's amnd the newest ones had the 'fix' already in place or have I misunderstood something?

Anyhow.. how are the rest of you Phoenix 8's doing in the heat now that summer is upon us? Please bear in mind I'm an Ex-Brit who has not yet fully got used to the heat though I had no probs with the last couple of cars (Celica GTS & Solara GLS V6) and their A/C....

Look to be getting my 8 in the next couple of weeks if all goes well..

I live in Tucson and have a Winning Blue 8 with 1600 miles. No problems with overheating or performance even with the A/C on and it's been 100 to 105 F just about every day for the last three weeks. I wouldn't worry about an 8 in Phoenix or even that deepest level of hell called Yuma. One word of advice, though. Definitely get the Mazda sunshade for the windshield and try to park the car facing west. With this strategy, the 8's interior stays amazingly cool, even on my dark-colored car. The best deal I've found online for the sunshade is here:

a/c

With regards to A/c i think its a personal preference. In speaking to another club member, he made the remark, "its not FORD a/c, its jap (not racially motivated) a/c" and I agree. for me, 110 outside, the a/c is fine, i usually keep it on setting 3 or 2. for the wife, it is never cold enough. so she gets 3 vents, i get one (still ok for me).

Well, I went to another dealer today and test drove another RX-8 and lo and behold it's A/C worked so much better.. (Maybe the other one did not have the Amp fix even though that dealer assured me it had. Also the acceleration seems a heck of a lot smoother on this one that the previous one.. almost like the other one had been put through the mill a bit even if it did only have 114 miles..) so I bought this one there on the spot with 30 miles on the clock (12 of which were mine during my test drive) and got a nice little deal in the process..

Thanks all for the help and advice... It's this kind of friendly support that, in part, convinced me to go with the RX-8..... Well apart from the fact it's a great car!

Thumbs up

I've had my 8 for only 2 weeks and 400 breakin miles. The AZ.
heat is pretty intense so far...but I have'nt had any air cond.
problems. It keeps the interior nice and cold although I try and
keep from driving too much in the heat of the day. No overheating
either. I love this car and it's only been a few weeks of driving.
Can't wait to get this up in the higher rpm band. Now is the time
to buy the car. The 05's are coming out, and you can get a good deal on remaining 04's.

Jesse, go ahead and add me to the list, but my schedule probably won't allow me to attend many meets. Still, it'd be nice to know what's going on in AZ. Thanks.

Thumbs up Update on AZ and '8' (and a bit about Shell V-Power)

Well, I cannot complain at all about the '8's A/C through this summer so far.. Both of our '8's have been fine, internal temp wise.. even on the hottest and/or most humid days. However, as I noted earlier... one '8' I test drove had serious A/C issues.. (It was built 11/03) whereas both ours were built 04/04 so maybe they resolved the issue for the later builds?

Don't know about performance and the heat as it's stayed pretty hot all summer so far.. but I did notice a little 'pick-up' in accel when I was up in Payson.. though only a little mind you.

Finally, I switched over to Shell 91 (No 93 here ) V-Power and only use that gas now, unless I'm somewhere it's not available.. and I have noticed both an improvement in MPG (2-3 MPG better around town) and performance (a smoothness in accel for example..) when the car has been drinking only that gas for a couple of tanks.. Put something else in.. and the car seems to be a little rougher round the edges so to speak.. and MPG drops back to about 20 MPG around town.

Anyhow.. so far.. absolutely great.. and no probs with either of our '8's.

I live in Mesa and the car has been agreeable for the most part. It does get horrible gas mileage, something that is not helped by the incessant cooling fan operation in our heat. Berge Mazda lied to me when I took my car in, saying they had a computer adjustment needing to be doen which would increase the car's performance. It turned out to be a cold-start adjustment, something we Phoenicians need not worry about. I saw a nice black RX on the northbound 101 a month ago, any of you own it?
