I made the trip to the Smokies a few times several years ago using Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway exclusively. You are in for a real treat. The scenery is magnificent. The speed limit is only 40mph as I recall. You can probably make it in one day if you start real early and drive till dark, but, trust me you wont want too. There are tons of scenic overlooks, and you will find yourself pulling over frequently to check out the views. The road is perfect for the 8, twisties most of the way. Do yourself a favor, take your time and enjoy the ride. Break up the trip into 2 days and stop at a motel.

ps: Bring a camera

Did a long stretch of Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Pkwy a few years back on a M/C. Spectacular scenery, for sure, but I found that after a couple of hundred mile of similar scenes, together with the slow speeds, I had to get off and head for some faster roads. You might want to have a backup route in mind as you travel. I would also agree with Leadfoot, one day would be a bit much when considering the relatively slow speeds and slowly moving traffic at times. Enjoy your trip!

Not sure where in CT you will be leaving from, but Google Maps says it is a 20 hr drive from Hartford to Atlanta, mostly Interstate travel. So with the slower route the trip would certainly be considerably more than that.

Sorry, totally unreasonable if you are taking Skyline, IMHO. :o
You would be pushing 15 hours from CT to Atlanta taking freeway.

I just got back from a trip to NC. Left Columbia, MD at 0400 and arrived in Cleveland TN ( just north of Chattanooga) at 1400. @ 625 miles. Took I81 most of the way, with 2 stops for gas and a meal. Driving 72 most of the way and 85 in portions of TN.

Take 2 days and spend the night in a mountain B&B. Beautiful up there and well worth it.

Drove the Blue Ridge from Virginia. It's OK if you have no time limits. If speed is important... do the Interstate. Look forward to seeing ya.

dbyrd3130, plan on attending the Grand American with us next year at the Barber track in Alabama. That's a lot closer than Mexico City for goodness sake! We had a great group attending this year and Speedsource loves us.
