Picking up my 8 this Tuesday, 3/22/05!
Pickup up my 2005 Brilliant Black RX-8 this coming Tuesday from All Star Mazda in Long Island, NY. Only two more days, I can't wait. This will actually be my first manual car but I have driver a few sticks before. (2003 VW GTI 1.8T, Camaros, ect).
Funny thing is I actually wasn't even planning on buying a car but I landed a nice career job as a real estate paralegal at a law office and they said I need a car to do house closings and there might be some travel involved if the closings were done at the borrower's house and not the office so I was like... okay, I can afford one so why not? I saw the Mazda6 and I really liked it but then I test drove the 6-speed RX-8 and I just had to have it... no question about it, I needed to have it. So, that's basically it in a nutshell. I'm putting 10k downpayment on it.
Again, it is a 2005 Black 6-speed RX-8 w/ sport package.

Yes, $0.33 a mile for gas costs. Employer also pays for all my oil changes as well and pays a % of my costs for schedule service at the dealer. Only thing I really have to worry about is buying snow tires for the New York City/Long Island winters. One attorney here has a 350z and last snow storm we had he got stuck on the side of the road, ended up leaving the car there and when he went back to get it, someone had skidded off the road and hit it...
Rotario, yeah, sorry about the RX-9 thing. I'll get one of those too if/when they ever release it. :-P
I'm already getting ahead of myself here. I don't even have the car yet and I'm already thinking about upgrades to the suspension, exhaust, maybe the GReddy turbo if it proves to hold up well.
First thing I'm definitely doing is tinting the windows and maybe swapping out the factory speakers for some new ones. I have a pair of 6½ MB Quart lying here with an Alpine 4 channel amp. So all I'd have to buy are 6x9 MB Quart for the rears.
I was also thinking about Navigation but I figured I might as well get one of those portable ones like the Magellan or something. Having navigation would be ideal for me though, considering I do travel to borrower's houses for work.

Vdelvec, congrats on your purchase!!
Winter tires will probably be needed when the time comes. I would also suggest to you that any mods you make be for performance. I think an obnoxiously loud exhaust, wild bodykits or bling-bling appearance items might not project the professionalism expected from a lawfirm.
Just a thought that popped in my head... but it's purely up to you. You will have fun with this car...

Congrats!
Your first mod should be screens to protect your AC condensor and oil coolers. Check the DIY forum for details, or you can get them from a couple of vendors here. This was Mazda's biggest oversight IMO. Any flying stone can cost you $hundreds in damage and it's not covered by warranty.

NYC/LI doesn't get winters like we do, but you've had more than your share of bad ones this year!! I got my 8 last year , before the last nasty snowfall of the year, oooooouuuccchhhh.
Got some Pirelli 240 snowsports this year and the car rides great, handles snow with NO problem. It is definately more fun to drive in snow than my Intrepid R/T with All-seasons was.
Break in IS a bitch, I really tried to take it easy. Honest.
